Abstract: An article that includes: an inorganic oxide substrate having opposing major surfaces; and an optical film structure disposed on a first major surface of the substrate, the optical film structure comprising one or more of a silicon-containing oxide, a silicon-containing nitride and a silicon-containing oxynitride and a physical thickness from about 50 nm to less than 500 nm. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or greater measured at an indentation depth of about 100 nm or a maximum hardness of 9 GPa or greater measured over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm, the hardness and the maximum hardness measured by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test. Further, the article exhibits a single-side photopic average reflectance that is less than 1%.

The glass ceramic has a composition which yields a liquidus viscosity that enables formation of the parent glass by down-draw techniques such as fusion-draw and slot-draw methods. Abstract: A window for a sensing system is provided that includes: a substrate comprising an outer and an inner primary surface; an outer layered film disposed on the outer primary surface; and an inner layered film disposed on the inner primary surface. Each of the outer and inner layered films comprises alternating high index and low index layers. The outer layered film comprises a scratch resistant layer having a thickness from about 0.5 μm to about 10 μm, and exhibits a hardness of at least 11 GPa, as measured with a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test. The window exhibits an average transmittance of greater than 85% within ±25 nm of at least one wavelength within the infrared spectrum from 900 nm to 1600 nm and an average transmittance of less than 5% in the visible spectrum from 420 nm to 650 nm, each at an angle of incidence

Abstract: A method, of reducing display device energy consumption, including: (a) determining lighting conditions ambient to a display device; (b) determining content that a user chooses to view on the display device; (c) calculating the user's perception of display quality using an image appearance model; and (d) adjusting, when the perceived display quality is higher than a target display quality, display device conditions so that the perceived display quality matches the target display quality so as to reduce energy consumption. An apparatus utilizing the method so as to reduce energy consumption while providing an aesthetically pleasing viewing experience to a user.

Abstract: Embodiments of a layered-substrate comprising a substrate and a layer disposed thereon, wherein the layered-substrate is able to withstand fracture when assembled with a device that is dropped from a height of at least 100 cm onto a drop surface, are disclosed. The layered-substrate may exhibit a hardness of at least about 10 GPa or at least about 20 GPa. The substrate may include an amorphous substrate or a crystalline substrate. Examples of amorphous substrates include glass, which is optionally chemically strengthened. Examples of crystalline substrates include single crystal substrates (e.g. sapphire) and glass ceramics. Articles and/or devices including such layered-substrate and methods for making such devices are also disclosed.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, there is an article including a glass-ceramic substrate having a major surface, an optical coating is disposed on the major surface and forms an appearance-enhancing surface, the optical coating including a appearance-enhancing coating, and a scratch-resistant layer. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or more, and a photopic average diffuse light reflectance measured at the appearance-enhancing surface of one of: (i) about 0.3% or less; (ii) about 0.2% or less; (iii) about 0.1% or less, over an optical wavelength regime in the range from about 400 nm to about 800 nm. Further, in the (L*, a*, b*) colorimetry system of the International Commission on Illumination, at near-normal incidence, the article comprises a diffuse reflectance dE* of one of: (i) about 3 or less; (ii) about 2 or less; or (iii) about 1 or less, where dE* is defined as dE*=sqrt(L*2+a*2+b*2).
