A coated glass article is described herein that includes a glass substrate including a first major surface and a second major surface. The first major surface and the second major surface may be opposing sides of the glass substrate. The coated glass article includes an optical coating disposed on the first major surface of the glass substrate. The coated glass article may have a retained strength after impact damage of greater than or equal to 250 MPa. The coated glass article may have a failure height of greater than or equal to 50 cm as measured according to a Drop Test Method on 80 grit sandpaper. In addition, the substrate can comprise 5.0-10.0 mol % Li2O, 1.0-10.0 mol % Na2O, and a lithium to sodium molar ratio (Li2O:Na2O) from 1.2 to 2.0.

A cover glass article is described herein that includes: a substrate comprising an outer primary surface with an outer optical film structure disposed thereon and an inner primary surface with an inner optical film structure disposed thereon. The outer film structure comprises a first plurality of alternating high index and low index layers with an outermost low index layer. The inner film structure comprises a second plurality of alternating high index and low index layers with a low or high index layer disposed on the inner primary surface, and an innermost low or high index layer. Each high index layer of the first and the second plurality comprises a nitride or an oxynitride, and an oxide or a nitride, respectively. Further, the cover glass article exhibits an average photopic transmittance of greater than 95% and a maximum hardness of greater than 10 GPa.

A cover article for a sensor is described herein that includes: a substrate comprising a thickness from 50 μm to 5000 μm, an outer primary surface, and an inner primary surface; and an outer layered film disposed on the outer primary surface. The substrate is a chemically-strengthened glass or glass-ceramic substrate. The cover article exhibits a first-surface average reflectance of less than 10% for wavelengths from 1000 nm to 1700 nm for at least one angle of incidence from 8° to 60°.

Articles are described that may include substrates having a major surface, the major surface comprising a first portion and a second portion. A first direction that is normal to the first portion of the major surface may not be equal to a second direction that is normal to the second portion of the major surface. The angle between the first direction and the second direction may be at least 15 degrees. An optical coating may be disposed on at least the first portion and the second portion of the major surface. The optical coating may form an antireflective surface.

According to one embodiment, there is an article including a glass-ceramic substrate having a major surface, an optical coating is disposed on the major surface and forms an appearance-enhancing surface, the optical coating including a appearance-enhancing coating, and a scratch-resistant layer. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or more, and a photopic average diffuse light reflectance measured at the appearance-enhancing surface of one of: (i) about 0.3% or less; (ii) about 0.2% or less; (iii) about 0.1% or less, over an optical wavelength regime in the range from about 400 nm to about 800 nm. Further, in the (L*, a*, b*) colorimetry system of the International Commission on Illumination, at near-normal incidence, the article comprises a diffuse reflectance dE* of one of: (i) about 3 or less; (ii) about 2 or less; or (iii) about 1 or less, where dE* is defined as dE*=sqrt(L*2+a*2+b*2).
Abstract:
A down-drawable glass ceramic. The glass ceramic has a composition which yields a liquidus viscosity that enables formation of the parent glass by down-draw techniques such as fusion-draw and slot-draw methods. The resulting glass ceramic is white or translucent in appearance with high strength achieved through heat treatment of the fusion-formed glass.

Embodiments of a layered-substrate comprising a substrate and a layer disposed thereon, wherein the layered-substrate is able to withstand fracture when assembled with a device that is dropped from a height of at least 100 cm onto a drop surface, are disclosed. The layered-substrate may exhibit a hardness of at least about 10 GPa or at least about 20 GPa. The substrate may include an amorphous substrate or a crystalline substrate. Examples of amorphous substrates include glass, which is optionally chemically strengthened. Examples of crystalline substrates include single crystal substrates (e.g. sapphire) and glass ceramics. Articles and/or devices including such layered-substrate and methods for making such devices are also disclosed.

A screen protector is described herein that is configured to be releasably attached to an optical coating on a glass-containing display of an electronic device. The protector comprises: a glass-containing substrate comprising an outer and inner primary surface; an antireflective (AR) coating on the outer primary surface; and an interlayer on the inner primary surface for releasable attachment to the optical coating on the display. The interlayer comprises an adhesive, a physical thickness from about 10 μm to 500 μm, and one or more refractive indices from ˜1.2 to 1.6. Further, an average photopic reflectance of the screen protector can be less than 2% for all incident angles from 0° to 30°. The interlayer can comprise optically clear adhesive (OCA), polymer-containing layer, and releasable adhesive layers. An anti-splinter (AS) film can be between the interlayer and the substrate. The interlayer and/or AS film may be a cyclo olefin, cellulose triacetate or polyurethane.

An article that includes: an inorganic oxide substrate having opposing major surfaces; and an optical film structure disposed on a first major surface of the substrate, the optical film structure comprising one or more of a silicon-containing oxide, a silicon-containing nitride and a silicon-containing oxynitride and a physical thickness from about 50 nm to less than 500 nm. The article exhibits a hardness of 8 GPa or greater measured at an indentation depth of about 100 nm or a maximum hardness of 9 GPa or greater measured over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm, the hardness and the maximum hardness measured by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test. Further, the article exhibits a single-side photopic average reflectance that is less than 1%.
