    Abstract: A method of operating a multi-phase electric machine includes operating a six-phase machine with six phases that are configured into a first group having a first neutral connection and a second group having a second neutral connection. The method also includes determining whether at least one of the six phases is experiencing a fault. In response to the determining, the method includes combining the first and second neutral connections to form a common neutral connection to continue operating the six-phase machine by using the remaining phase not experiencing the fault.

    Abstract: A method and system for bidirectional charging in an electric vehicle include controlling a multi-phase machine in the electric vehicle. In response to determining that a direction of energy flow is from an electric grid to the electric vehicle, the method and system include operating a first set of phases in the multi-phase machine at a grid frequency of the electric grid and connecting the first set of phases in the multi-phase machine to the electric grid. In response to connecting the first set of phases in the multi-phase machine to the electric grid, the method and system include operating a second set of phases in the multi-phase machine, where the second set of phases in the multi-phase machine generates energy via electrical coupling to the first set of phases in the multi-phase machine. The method and system also include providing the energy generated by the second set of phases in the multi-phase machine to charge an energy source of the electric vehicle.

    Abstract: A method and system of operating a multi-phase electric machine include operating an inverter to control the multi-phase machine. The inverter has a plurality of inverter legs including an auxiliary inverter leg. Each of the plurality of inverter legs has at least one switch device. The multi-phase machine has a plurality of phases in which each phase is controlled by a respective inverter leg of the inverter. The method and system also include determining whether a phase of the multi-phase machine is experiencing a partial phase loss, for example, by injecting a signal into the phases and analyzing the frequency response. In response to determining that a phase of the multi-phase machine is experiencing a partial phase loss, the method and system include utilizing the auxiliary inverter leg to supplement energy to the phase experiencing the partial phase loss to continue operating the multi-phase machine.

    Abstract: A method for operating an electric drive system is provided. For example, a controller retrieves, from memory, a predictive model indicating predictive winding temperatures associated with known negative temperature coefficient (NTC) temperatures, wherein the predictive model is based on historical NTC temperatures and historical winding temperatures, as well as one or more operating parameters. The controller receives current NTC information indicating one or more current NTC readings corresponding to one or more switching devices within the inverter. The controller determines estimated winding temperatures corresponding to the electric machine based on the predictive model and the one or more current NTC readings as well as current operating parameters. The controller provides instructions to adjust inputs to the electric machine based on the estimated winding temperatures.
