A method of inhibiting inadvertent and unauthorized writing and reading of information to and from a storage medium comprises the steps of (a) writing a first code in a predetermined location on the storage medium, the first code being indicative of a first protection mode of the storage medium; (b) receiving a command to change the protection mode of the storage medium from the first protection mode to a second protection mode; and, in response to the command, (c) writing in the predetermined location on the storage medium, in place of the first code, a second code indicative of the second protection mode. A protection mode can inhibit writing to the storage medium, both writing and reading to and from the medium, or neither. Changing of protection modes can also be password protected.

An energy usage register is updated at regular intervals according to the energy used during each time interval. An attenuated average energy usage value is obtained by attenuating the energy usage measures over time and integrating the results. The average energy level is compared with several predetermined energy threshold profiles to select a full- or reduced-power operating mode. Operating mode selection automatically adapts to the usage pattern to optimally balance power consumption with operational accessibility.

A system is disclosed for canceling cross-talk in a data read signal from an optical data storage medium. The system includes three AD converters for receiving read signals from three read sensors, and the read signals respectively represent data from a center data track and its two adjacent side data tracks on an optical data storage disk. The digitized signals are sent to a skew compensator to remove time skew between the signals. Then, the amplitudes represented by the side track signals are adjusted, and the adjusted side track signals are subtracted from the center track signal to cancel cross-talk in the center track signal which is attributable to data contained in the side data tracks. The center track signal is then equalized to account for the frequency response of the center track read sensor.

An integral combination magnetic transducer and suspension assembly suitable for use in both contact recording and in winchester-type applications is described. A generally rectangular elongated flat suspension member includes a vertical-type inductive read/write transducer formed integrally with the suspension member and is embedded in one end of the suspension member. The vertical inductive transducer is suitable for vertical recording applications. The transducer vertical magnetic pole tip and magnetic yoke structure are formed at one end of the suspension member with the vertical pole tip extending to and exposed at a air bearing surface formed on the lower surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member. The integral transducer/suspension assembly can be adapted for either flying above the recording media or for use in continuous contact with the recording media. The air bearing surface is formed on the lower surface of a wear pad. The fabrication of the transducer/suspension assembly is adapted to be performed at the wafer level.

A cathode of a solid-oxide fuel cell includes a first ionic conducting layer, a second layer deposited over the first layer and formed from a mixed ionic and electronic conductor layer including an oxygen ion conducting phase, and a third layer deposited over the second layer and formed from a mixed ionic and electronic conductor layer. A sintering aid and pore formers are added to the second layer and the third layer to establish ionic, electronic, and gas diffusion paths that are contiguous. By adjusting the microstructure of the second and the third layer, a high performance low resistance cathode is formed that bonds well to the electrolyte, is highly electro-catalytic, and has a relatively low overall resistance. By using inexpensive and readily available substances as sintering aid and as pore formers, a low-cost cathode is provided.

To provide the assistance, the driver assistance system synthesizes the inputs. For objects in the vehicle environment detected in the inputs, object risk values are determined by applying a set of rules to the objects. The object risk values are aggregated by quadrant to generate a set of quadrant risk values. A driver assistance system of the vehicle is controlled based on the quadrant risks.

An electronic control unit (ECU) is disposed on the vehicle and is configured to impose a speed limit for the vehicle when the RTC failure module determines that the RTC system has failed and the road condition determining module determines that the vehicle encountering a poor road surface condition.

Disclosed are multifiber ferrule assemblies and methods for manufacturing the same. In one embodiment, a finished multifiber ferrule can be provided with a front end having a first front surface that extends beyond a second front surface, thereby inhibiting interaction with a laser beam during processing. A plurality of optical fibers can be fixed within respective optical fiber bores and extend from respective optical fiber bore openings to a position beyond the first front surface. The plurality of optical fibers can be processed by cutting and polishing with a laser beam for providing each optical fiber with a final polished end surface located beyond the first front surface. In further embodiments, an offset structure is positioned with respect to a finished multifiber ferrule after cutting and polishing the optical fibers.
