A method of forming a uniform thickness layer of a selected material on a surface of a substrate comprises steps of: (a) providing a multi-stage cathode sputtering apparatus comprising a group of spaced-apart cathode/target assemblies and a means for transporting at least one substrate/workpiece past each cathode/target assembly, each cathode/target assembly comprising a sputtering surface oriented substantially parallel to the first surface of the substrate during transport past the group of cathode/target assemblies, the group of cathode/target assemblies adapted for providing different angular sputtered film thickness profiles; and (b) transporting the substrate past each cathode/target assembly while providing different sputtered film thickness profiles from at least some of the cathode/target assemblies, such that a plurality of sub-layers is deposited on the surface of the substrate/workpiece which collectively form a uniform thickness layer of the selected material.

Magnetic recording media exhibiting improved Hr, SNR and S*, suitable for high areal recording density, are obtained by forming a substantially uniform patterned Al or Al alloy layer on a non-magnetic substrate which is substantially replicated in subsequently applied layers to form a data zone. Embodiments include sputtering depositing an Al or Al alloy layer on the substrate and anodizing the sputtered layer to form a plurality of substantially uniform hexagonal cells comprising aluminum oxide. The hexagonal pattern is replicated in a subsequently deposited and epitaxially grown magnetic layer such that the magnetic grains are separated, thereby reducing magnetostatic interactions therebetween.

A magnetic recording medium having a substrate and a SiO2-containing magnetic layer comprising grains is disclosed. The magnetic layer has substantial SiO2 between the grains. This condition is achieved by sputter depositing the magnetic layer in a chamber containing a gas under vacuum. The gas contains substantially no oxygen. Such a gas is one into which no oxygen is intentionally introduced to create an oxygen-containing gas mixture but may contain a trace amount of oxygen molecules in an amount that are present in air under a similar vacuum as that of the gas in the chamber.

Carbon or boron is added into the CoCr layers of a multiplayer perpendicular magnetic media structure to reduce media noise. The perpendicular magnetic media structure has sharp interfaces between Co-alloy layers and Pd or Pt layers and significantly reduced exchange coupling. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the perpendicular magnetic media structure with carbon or boron additives is 700 Å FeCo30.8B12/20 Å TaOx/700 Å FeCo30.8B12/20 Å TaOx/700 Å FeCo30.8B12/20 Å TaOx/158 Å FeCo30.8B12/17 Å Ta/49 Å ITO/33 Å CoCr37Ru10/2.5 Å COy/2.5 Å C/[(CoCr9)C6.8/Pd]19/50 Å CHN. [(CoCr9)C6.8/Pd]19 means 19 layers of the bi-layer stack (CoCr9)C6.8/Pd. TaOx stands for surface-oxidized Ta and COy stands for C oxides . ITO stands for Indium Tin Oxide and consists of In2O3 and Sn2O5 at 80 and 20 molecular percent respectively. CHN refers to hydrogenated and nitrogenated carbon.

A magnetic recording medium exhibiting high remanent coercivity and low noise is produced by depositing a first NiAl seedlayer on a non-magnetic substrate, e.g., glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic material, at a relatively low temperature, and subsequently depositing a second NiAl seedlayer on the first seedlayer at a relatively higher temperature. Embodiments include depositing a first NiAl seedlayer at a temperature less than about 120.degree. C., e.g., less than about 100.degree. C., and depositing a second NiAl seedlayer thereon at a temperature greater than about 200.degree. C., e.g. greater than about 230.degree. C. Embodiments also include depositing a Cr-alloy underlayer, CrV, on the second seedlayer.
