    摘要: A nanolayered coated cutting tool that includes a substrate that has a surface with a coating on the surface thereof. The coating comprises a plurality of coating sets of alternating nanolayers of titanium nitride and titanium aluminum nitride wherein each coating set has a thickness up to about 100 nanometers. The coating includes a bonding region and an outer region. The bonding region comprises a plurality of the coating sets wherein the thickness of each coating set increases as the set moves away from the surface of the substrate. The outer region comprises a plurality of the coating sets wherein the thickness of each coating set is about equal.

    摘要: A process for making a coated body comprising the steps of: providing a substrate comprising tungsten, carbide and cobalt, and the substrate having at least one surface with eta phase thereon; subjecting the substrate with eta phase on the surface thereof to a conversion treatment at a temperature between about 1250° C. and about 2000° C. under at least a partial vacuum for a duration sufficient as to convert at least a portion of the eta phase to fibrous tungsten carbide grains that the fibrous tungsten carbide grains are at the surface whereby the substrate surface presents a surface roughness, Ra, of greater than 12 microinches; and applying a coating to the surface of the substrate.

    摘要: A diamond coated elongate rotary cutting member and method of making the same. The cutting member includes an axially forward cutting surface, a flute and a fluted land. The cutting member comprises a substrate with hard grains bonded together with a metallic binder. The substrate has a first substrate region that presents an irregular surface so as to define the axially forward cutting surface and the fluted land. The first substrate region contains relatively large hard grains near the surface thereof that are larger in size than the hard grains in the interior of the substrate. A diamond coating is on the surface of the first substrate region. The substrate has a second substrate region that defines the flute.

    摘要: A physical vapor deposition apparatus for coating a substrate that includes a substrate holder that receives the substrate and a coating material source that emits a divergent stream of coating material. The divergent stream of coating material includes a diverse portion of coating material and a directed portion of coating material. The apparatus further includes a blinder means, positioned to be in operative engagement with the coating material source, for receiving and impacting the divergent stream of coating material so that the directed portion of coating material continuously exits the blinder means traveling generally toward the substrate holder. The directed portion of coating material exhibits less divergence than the divergent stream of coating material.

    摘要: A coated body that has a substrate of tungsten, carbon, and cobalt, and wherein the substrate presents a surface. Eta phase is present at the surface of the substrate. Fibrous tungsten carbide grains are present at the surface of the substrate. The surface of the substrate has a surface roughness, Ra, of greater than about 12 microinches. A coating layer is on the surface of the substrate.
