    摘要: Embodiments herein illustrate patterned servo data that is used to facilitate subsequent servo writing to a magnetic disk while allowing the patterned disk to be planarized with a relatively simple planarization process. One disk drive system includes a magnetic disk that is patterned with magnetic lands and nonmagnetic grooves. The magnetic disk also includes bootstrap bands that may be configured at an inner diameter of the magnetic disk. The magnetic lands of the bootstrap bands have varying sizes and are patterned as servo data having a uniform polarity of magnetization. The bootstrap bands have a width that is sufficiently narrow to support an air bearing surface of a slider. The data tracks are circumferentially configured proximate to the bootstrap bands. The slider reads the patterned servo data to facilitate writing of additional servo data in the data tracks.

    摘要: A multiple data layer dye-based optical disk drive uses a disk with a light transmissive substrate onto which the laser light at a single wavelength is incident. The disk substrate supports at least two spatially separated data layers formed of dye material. The disk is either an air-gap structure wherein each data layer is supported on a separate substrate and the substrates are separated by an air-gap, or a solid structure wherein a solid light transmissive spacer layer separates the data layers. The invention makes use of the characteristic anomalous dispersion absorption band of certain dye materials, in which at a specific wavelength the dye material exhibits a high index of refraction and low extinction coefficient. This allows the first data layer (the one nearest the incident laser light) and intermediate data layers to exhibit both sufficient absorption when the laser is focused on those data layers and high transmissivity when the laser is focused on the last or farther data layers. The index of refraction of the dye-based data layers is selected to be significantly greater than the adjacent substrate and spacer layer to enhance the reflectivity, and the thickness of the data layers is selected to take advantage of the constructive interference effect caused by the reflection at those interfaces. In one embodiment of the invention the dye material for the data layers is a mixture of two different dyes that are not chemically reactive with one another and that retain their individual optical properties. This dye-based data layer exhibits anomalous dispersion absorption at two distinct wavelengths, thereby allowing disks recorded at one wavelength to be read by optical disk drives that use lasers operating at a lower wavelength.

    摘要: A single-sided ablative write-once optical disk is usable without a protective cartridge. The disk includes the conventional radiation-transparent polycarbonate substrate that has one surface serving as the disk outer face and an opposite surface that supports the fluorinated hydrocarbon subbing layer and the tellurium-based active data layer. The tellurium alloy in the data layer flows to form holes when subjected to incident laser radiation through the substrate. A multilayer protective coating is formed over the tellurium-based layer and has an outer surface that serves as the other outer face for the disk. The multilayer protective coating includes a deformable layer formed directly on the tellurium-based layer and a scratch-resistant hardcoat formed on the deformable layer. The deformable layer has sufficient hardness and modulus of elasticity to permit the tellurium alloy to flow at conventional laser power levels. In one embodiment the deformable layer is a silicone elastomer. In another embodiment the deformable layer is a fluorinated hydrocarbon, and a metal layer, such as an aluminum-chromium alloy, is formed between the deformable layer and the hardcoat.

    摘要: An optical data storage system uses an optical medium made of a stack of spaced-apart optical disks. Each disk in the stack is made of light-transmissive material, such as polycarbonate when the system is a CD-ROM system, and has a partially light-transmissive data layer on at least one of its faces. A focusing lens in the system focuses light to the data layers along optical paths, with each data layer corresponding to a unique optical path length. The light is focused to each data layer by reflection off adjacent data layers such that the total substrate thickness through which the light passes is the same for each optical path. In this manner, the fixed spherical aberration correction provided by the focusing lens is adequate and variable aberration correction is not necessary. By appropriate selection of reflectivities of the multiple data layers in the disk stack, it is possible to design the system so that the effective reflected light intensity from each data layer is the same, and that adjustable signal amplification is not necessary.

    摘要: An apparatus, system, and method are provided for reducing edge damage of a disk during chemical mechanical polishing. The apparatus includes a disk carrier configured to receive a disk, the disk having an outside edge and an inside edge, a raised ring adjacent the outside edge of the disk and extending from a surface of the disk carrier to a height greater than a height of the disk, and a raised column adjacent the inside edge of the disk and having a height greater than a height of the disk. The system includes a disk carrier for receiving a disk, a raised ring adjacent the outside edge of each opening, and plugs insertable into a central opening in the disk and having a height greater than a height of the disk. The method includes providing the apparatus, inserting a disk into the apparatus, and polishing the disk.
