摘要: Disclosed is an improved type of fluorinated carbon (CFx) for use in electrical storage devices such as batteries and capacitors. The CFx is coated with a conductive material such as gold or carbon using vapor deposition. The resulting material exhibits better conductivity with concomitant lower impedance, higher electrical stability, and improved potential throughout the useful life of the device, as compared to uncoated CFx. The improved conductivity reduces the amount of nonactive material (e.g., carbon black) that needs to be added, thus improving the volumetric energy density. In addition, cells made with the subject CFx exhibit more constant voltages and higher overall voltage (2.0 volts with a lithium metal anode) throughout their useful life. Chemical or physical vapor deposition techniques to deposit a variety of metals or carbon may be used to create the improved CFx. The coated CFx may be used in primary or secondary batteries, as well as capacitors and hybrid devices. Methods for making and using the coated CFx are described.

摘要: This invention is an improved tissue localizing device for fixedly yet removably marking a volume of tissue containing a suspect region for excision. This invention also encompasses methods for deployment of the localizing device and its excision along with the marked tissue volume. At least one locator element is deployed into tissue and assumes a predetermined curvilinear shape to define a tissue border containing a suspect tissue region along a path. The locator element path preferably encompasses the distalmost portion of the tissue volume without penetrating that volume. Multiple locator elements may be deployed to further define the tissue volume along additional paths defining the tissue volume border that do not penetrate the volume. Other localization wire embodiments of the invention are disclosed in which the tissue volume may be penetrated by a portion of the device. Polar and tangential deployment configurations as well as a locator element that may be cold-formed by a die in the distal portion of the deployment tube into a permanent arcuate shape are also disclosed.

摘要: An implantable defibrillator lead comprises a flexible core onto which is wound helically wound coils to form an electrode. These electrode coils are partially encapsulated by a flexible matrix which holds them in their wrapped position around the core. Due to its coiled coil structure, this electrode provides improved flexibility, and can be used endocardially, intravascularly, epicardially, or subcutaneously. The electrode may function alternately as a defibrillation electrode and as a sensing electrode in a lead with a separate pacing electrode.

摘要: A body implantable electrode with rate controlled drug delivery is disclosed. A body implantable lead is provided for the delivery of stimulation energy to a desired body site includes a drug dispenser carried by the lead which retains a drug to be dispensed at least adjacent the desired body stimulation site. The drug may be one which is intended to counter thrombus formation, fibrosis, inflammation or arrhythmias, for example. The drug may be in liquid or powder form retained in a reservoir carried by the lead. The reservoir is formed as a pump which controls dispensing of the drug using a fluid drawing agent such as a salt.

摘要: A feedthrough is insulated and hermetically sealed by brazing a ceramic disk to a case cover and by brazing the top surface of the ceramic disk to the bottom surface of a feedthrough pinhead. Using this technique instead of forming a compression seal, the surface area for bonding is increased, increasing bond strength. The ceramic disk electrically insulates the feedthrough pin from the cover, and provides a large surface area for mechanically sealing the cell with the braze. Considering the small size of many cells, this increased surface area is important for getting a good seal and increasing bond strength. This design also creates a longer fluid path, providing greater hermeticity. Furthermore, a greater range of component material combinations is available because CTE compatibility limitations of the feedthrough pin, cover, and insulator are minimized. This feedthrough is applicable to broad array of applications and numerous material combinations.

摘要: Intracardiac lead for compliant fixation of a distal end of the lead to cardiac tissue. A fixation helix is disposed at the distal end of the lead. The fixation helix has a first end rigidly attached to the compliant fixation device and a second end that is sharpened to facilitate insertion of the fixation helix into cardiac tissue. The fixation helix can be designed to provide for either electrically active or inactive fixation. Once the lead is implanted in the cardiac tissue, the compliant fixation device, connecting the lead with the fixation helix, reduces the amount of lead movement that is transferred to the patient's tissue at the site of implantation of the fixation helix and reduces those forces from lead movement that could cause dislodgment of the fixation helix. The compliant fixation device thereby decreases the amount of irritation to the cardiac tissue, lessens the possibility of fibrous tissue growth around the area of the fixation helix, decreases the chance of dislodgment of the fixation helix, and reduces the possibility of perforation of the cardiac wall or tamponade of the pericardial sac.
