Abstract: A holster is provided to receive a radio (mobile communications device). The radio is operatively equipped with a front-facing touchscreen. The holster is equipped with an optical reflector. The optical reflector is adapted to change the direction of light rays passing through it in order to reflect only a portion of the front-facing touchscreen to a top window located within the holster. The top window and the touchscreen are substantially perpendicular to each other. The holster is equipped with at least one capacitive touch extension element that couples the top window to a point on the touchscreen to control an interface element on the touchscreen.

Abstract: Systems and methods described for text entry for multi-user text-based communication using a portable communication device with a graphical user interface shown on a display. A plurality of text character icons are displayed on a display by an electronic processor in a center area of the graphical user interface and messages are displayed along a perimeter area of the graphical user interface. A selection of one or more text character icons in the center area of the graphical user interface is detected and a new text message is generated based on the detected selection of the one or more text character icons. The new text message is chronologically inserted and displayed in accordance with the chronological sequence along the perimeter of the graphical user interface. The new text message is then transmitted from the device.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to reduce communication device peak current for alert tones are disclosed. A portable device may include a processor coupled to a transceiver and an alert tone controller coupled to the processor. The transceiver may be configured to process an audio signal representing an alert tone. The processor may be configured to determine whether an audio volume level setting exceeds a predetermined threshold. The alert tone controller may be activated based on the determination. The alert tone controller may be configured, based on the activation, to reduce an audio signal by adjustment to a peak-to-peak amplitude of the audio signal and generate an adjusted audio signal by a restriction on the maximum amplitude of the reduced audio signal.

Abstract: A user interface apparatus and method are provided for gloved and non-gloved touch sensitive button actuation. A user interface (100) embodied as a body wearable harness (104) provides a touch button control system having an activation button (120) and functional touch sensitive control buttons (108, 110, 140). The activation button (120) has a capacitive touch element (130) associated therewith that determines gloved or non-gloved operation based on a capacitive measurement taken in response to a finger input to the button. A plurality of control buttons (108, 110, and 140) are automatically assigned increased sensitivity levels in response to detected gloved mode operation in accordance with the measurement. The increased sensitivity levels allow various radio functions to be accessed by a gloved finger input during gloved mode operation with increased reliability. Additional control button identification can be added through the addition of vibrational alerts. Display and screen type control buttons can further be combined into larger and fewer buttons for ease of gloved landing.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to reduce communication device peak current for alert tones are disclosed. A portable device may include a processor coupled to a transceiver, a current limit trigger circuit, and an alert tone current limit controller. The transceiver may be configured to process an audio signal representing an alert tone. The processor may be configured to determine whether the transceiver is in a transmit state and whether an audio volume level setting exceeds a threshold. In response, the current limit trigger circuit may be configured to activate the alert tone current limit controller that may include a voltage scale controller configured to generate a reduced audio signal by adjusting a peak-to-peak amplitude of the audio signal representing the alert tone and an alert tone amplitude modulator configured to generate an adjusted audio signal by restricting the maximum amplitude of the reduced audio signal.

Abstract: A device, method and system for throttling current and/or power to peripherals is provided. A device comprises peripherals powered by a power source. The device further comprises a throttling circuit configured to: in response to receiving a given interrupt, cause throttling of respective currents to a given subset of the peripherals. The device further comprises a sensing circuit configured to: in response to determining that a sensed current from the power source exceeds a threshold current, provide the given interrupt to the throttling circuit. The device further comprises a primary processor configured to: determine the threshold current based at least on a predetermined maximum current of a presently prioritized peripheral; and provide the threshold current to the sensing circuit. The device further comprises a secondary processor configured to: determine the given subset of the peripherals based on an available current overhead.

The system includes a portable communications device that stores an identifier, which uniquely identifies the portable communications device, a user of the portable communications device, or both. The system also includes a garment. The garment includes a communications interface, a light source, and an electronic controller electrically coupled to the communications interface and to the light source. The electronic controller is configured to receive the identifier, via the communications interface, from the portable communications device. The electronic controller is further configured to cause the light source to generate a modulated optical output based on the identifier. In some embodiments, the electronic controller is further configured to receive a status indication from the portable communications device via the communications interface, and activate the light source based on the status indication.

Abstract: A system comprises a battery and a battery-powered device. Battery contacts and a data interface are therebetween. The battery includes low-power and high-power circuits to output power, from a cell, to the battery-powered device via the contacts. The high-power circuit outputs power higher than the low-power circuit. A switch(es) connects and disconnects the high-power circuit to/from the contacts, the low-power circuit connected to the contacts when the switch disconnects the high-power circuit. A voltage detector: detects a battery-voltage on the contacts and an output voltage on the data interface; when the output voltage is greater than the battery-voltage, controls the switch to connect the high-power circuit to the contacts; and when the output voltage is below the battery-voltage, controls the switch to disconnect the high-power circuit from the contacts. The battery-powered device provides the output voltage on the data interface as powered from the contacts by the battery.
