    摘要: A process is disclosed for forming magnetic media, in which a protective overcoat of either partially stabilized zirconia or partially stabilized hafnia directly overlies a magnetic thin film recording layer. First, a chromium underlayer is sputter deposited onto a planar aluminum nickel phosphorous substrate. A crystalline magnetic recording layer is deposited onto the chromium underlayer, and substantially replicates the crystalline orientation of the underlayer. The substrate, underlayer and recording layer are passivated briefly in an oxygen atmosphere. Then, the hafnia or zirconia underlayer is applied by RF reactive sputtering in an atmosphere of argon and oxygen, with the argon partial pressure at least ten times the oxygen partial pressure. The passivation step improves the adhesion of the subsequently deposited cover layer, while the oxygen in the reactive sputtering process maintains a desired stoichiometric proportion of oxygen in the cover layer, for substantially improved media tribological properties.

    摘要: In accordance with the present invention, the meltability of processed cheese is controlled to provide a desired degree of meltability by incorporating whey proteins in the process cheese mix and processing the process cheese mix under conditions of temperature and time so as to denature the whey proteins sufficiently to provide a predeterminted level of cross-linked beta-lactoglobulin and provide the desired level of meltability. The whey protein provided in the process cheese blend is selected to limit the lactose in the final product to a predetermined level. The method of the present invention avoids the need for the use of sodium hexametaphosphate and consequently permits, in process cheese manufacture greater flexibility in handling holdover cheese.

    摘要: A piston for a control valve of a water treatment apparatus includes a body having a central portion from which at least one flange projects radially outward. Each flange has an outer peripheral surface extending around the central portion with an annular groove therein. The annular groove is undercut thereby having a width that increases from the peripheral surface radially inward into the flange. A separate sealing ring is molded into the groove of each flange and is captivated therein by the undercut of the groove. That captivation better enables each sealing ring to resist forces produced by the water flowing through the control valve without becoming dislodged from the flange.

    摘要: A method of detecting contaminants on a window surface of a viewing system comprises the steps of: reflecting light off of contaminants on the window surface; capturing the reflected light in an image; converting the image into image data; and processing the image data to detect the contaminants on the window surface. Also, apparatus for detecting contaminants on an external surface of a window of a viewing system comprises: at least one light source for reflecting light from contaminants on the external surface; an imager for capturing an image of the reflected light and converting the image into image data; and a processor for processing the image data to detect the contaminants on the external surface. The apparatus may be embodied in a viewing system wherein the imager also captures images of a scene of the viewing system both including the light reflected from the contaminants and not including light reflected from contaminants; and the processor processes both of image data of the scene excluding reflected light from the contaminants, and image data of the scene including reflected light from the contaminants to detect the contaminants on the external surface.

The second pole is formed of a particular Co100-a-bZraCrb compound.     摘要: A low-fat natural cheese is manufactured from skim milk or skim milk cheese. In one embodiment of the invention, a gel-forming fat mimetic is added to skim milk to provide a cheese substrate. The gel-forming fat mimetic may be gelled in situ or may be pregelled. The cheese substrate is then subjected to a cheese make procedure to provide a cheese curd. The cheese curd is then cured to provide a low-fat skim milk cheese. The skim milk cheese is comminuted and heated to a temperature of from about 140.degree. F. to about 180.degree. F. for a period of time sufficient to provide a homogeneous cheese mass. The cheese mass is then packaged to provide a low-fat natural cheese.

    摘要: The disclosed invention provides a serpentine-shaped semiconductor superlattice for novel electric and electro-optic devices. The invention comprises a stepped, or vicinal substrate, having a plurality of layers deposited on the steps in succession. Each layer comprises at least two alternating materials. The extent to which each layer covers the exposed surface defines that layer's coverage ratio p. By varying the coverage ratios cyclically around p=1.0, the present invention creates undulating, or serpentine, connected paths of the materials. Each cycle of connected material may form a substantially parabolic path that grows widest at the extremum (or vertex) point of the parabola, where p=1.0. Charged carriers can be confined at these wide points, in quantum wires extending through the substrate parallel to the substrate steps. The resulting quantum mechanical structures allow reliable fabrication and operation of quantum wire lasers, waveguides and other electro-optical and electronic devices.
