Abstract:
An electroluminescent display contains an array of dynamically addressable pixels. The pixels are arranged on one side of a carrier substrate. Conductive vias in the substrate are electrically connected to each of the pixels. Each pixel consists of a bottom electrode that is coupled to a via, an electroluminescent material, and a dielectric material. A common top electrode is disposed on the dielectric material. A driver circuit conductor or connector is situated on the other side of the substrate and is electrically coupled to each of the conductive vias and to the common top electrode, so that each pixel can be individually addressed to illuminate the electroluminescent material on individual pixels.

An electronic apparatus, includes a plurality of electronic modules, each having a maximum thickness of no more than 90 microns, each comprising a substrate having a two sided edge connection pattern. The electronic modules are arranged adjacent to each other. Each pad of a first set of connection pads on a first electronic module is conductively connected to an opposing pad of a second set of connection pads of a second electronic module. The first set of connection pads is separated from the second set of connection pads by electrically conductive material that is less than 15 microns thick.

The display (1100) can be incorporated into a handheld device (100, 1200) to improve the use-ability of the device (100, 1200).
Abstract:
A stack for a bistable microelectronic switch is fabricated by providing a first metal electrode on a supporting substrate. A bistable macrocyclic compound is printed over the first electrode using a high speed printing process. A conductive polymer is then printed over the bistable macrocyclic compound using a high speed printing process, and a second electrode is then formed on the conductive polymer. Copper phthalocyanine is one bistable compound, and a combination of poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and poly-(styrenesulphonic acid) is the conductive polymer. The upper and lower electrodes are formed in a crossbar formation to create an addressable random access memory device. When a voltage less than a switching voltage is applied between two intersecting electrodes, the resistance is very high, and when a voltage greater than the switching voltage is applied, the resistance is generally two orders of magnitude lower.
Abstract:
A field emitting device having a plurality of preformed emitter objects. The emitter objects include sharp geometric discontinuities, and a significant number of these geometric discontinuities are oriented in a way that supports desired field emission activity. Field emission devices built with such emitters can be utilized to provide a flat display screen.
Abstract:
A method and system for clustering displays is disclosed. The method includes collecting clustering information of display devices. A profile is generated from the collected clustering information. A list of display configurations for the display devices is created based on the generated profile. A particular display configuration is selected from the created list of display configurations for clustering the displays. A display cluster is formed by clustering the displays of display devices in accordance with the selected display configuration and content is displayed on the display cluster.
Abstract:
A portable electronic device (510) having a self illuminating display (200, 202, 204, 206, 300, 512) that reduces both the thickness of known displays and processing steps in the fabrication thereof is provided. The portable electronic device (510) includes an electrowetting display (200, 202, 204, 206, 300, 512) having a plurality of transparent layers defining a cavity (219). A combination of a first fluid (218, 236) and a second fluid (210, 234, 244, 254) are positioned in the cavity. First circuitry (224) is configured to be coupled to a first voltage source (222) for selectively repositioning the second fluid (210, 234, 244, 254) in relation to the first fluid (218, 236). A plurality of quantum dots (208, 360) is positioned within the second fluid (210, 234, 244, 254), and a light source (209, 309) is disposed contiguous to the plurality of layers. Second circuitry (228) is configured to be coupled to a second voltage source (226) for selectively causing the light source (209, 309) to emit photons to strike the plurality of quantum dots (208 360). Additional similar stacks of layers (204, 206) may be added to provide a color display.

An electrochemical cell is provided with first and second electrodes, and a solid polymer electrolyte disposed therebetween. The electrodes may either be of the same or different materials and may be fabricated from ruthenium, iridium, cobalt, tungsten, vanadium, iron, molybdenum, halfnium, nickel, silver, zinc, and combinations thereof. The solid polymer electrolyte is in intimate contact with both the anode and the cathode, and is made from a polymeric support structure having dispersed therein an electrolyte active species. The polymer support structure is preferably a multi-layered support structure in which at least a first layer is fabricated of a polybenzimidazole, and at least a second layer is fabricated of, for example, poly vinyl alcohol.
Abstract:
An electrostatically energized and integrable relay is disclosed that has dimensions that permit closure and maintenance of a contact between electrodes using electrostatic forces exclusively. The physical dimensions are such that it could be formed using integrated circuit fabrication techniques. Small spacing between the electrodes of the relay permit the device to be usable in an integrated form, perhaps on an integrated circuit substrate.
