Abstract:
An example plastic intake manifold is assembled with an inner shell received within an outer shell. The method of assembling the outer shell to the inner shell comprises a localized thickness that defines a desired laser weld joint along which laser energy is utilized to form the desired joint between the outer shell and the inner shell. The method also provides for completing a desired weld around an interfering protrusion on an outer surface of the outer shell.
Abstract:
Laser welding of plastic involves a laser passing through laser translucent then laser absorbent material. A technical description as envisaged here is Laser Contour Welding. Universally, laser welding is done by Quasi simultaneous techniques and rarely by Contour techniques. Regular or symmetrical parts, under 5 inches are welded by Quasi simultaneous. Asymmetric and large parts are best welded by Contour Welding. Kinematics of robots permits a complex contour. Automotive plastic manifolds exceed 5 inches with asymmetry. The pairing of robot contour and laser welding facilitates a new Automotive manifold. It requires a new split line for laser access and manufacturing as described. Encompassing the above requirements and solutions can reduce the moldings for a V8 to 2 major operations.
Abstract:
A high pressure vortex fuel injector comprising a hollow housing or body including a plurality of passages at least one of which is adapted to receive fuel through an inlet. The injector also includes a passage for guiding the piston into seating relationship with the valve seat to control the flow of fuel through the metering orifice and a solenoid assembly for moving the piston relative to the valve seat. The injector further includes a swirl or vortex chamber, to angularly accelerate the fuel, formed in cooperation with the first surface of the valve seat. The injector additionally includes passages for permitting fuel to circulate about an electric coil thereof, thereby cooling same during instances when the metering orifice is closed. The injector further includes passages within the swirl chamber for assisting in the rapid formation of a conical spray pattern upon the opening of the metering orifice.
Abstract:
An apparatus includes an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device configured to protect a circuit from ESD conditions. The protection device includes an emitter region having a first diffusion polarity; a collector region laterally spaced apart from the emitter region, and having the first diffusion polarity; and a barrier region interposed laterally between the emitter region and the collector region while contacting the emitter region. The barrier region has a second diffusion polarity opposite from the first diffusion polarity. The device can further include a base region having the second diffusion polarity, and laterally surrounding and underlying the emitter region and the barrier region. The barrier region can have a higher dopant concentration than the base region, and block a lateral current flow between the collector and emitter regions, thus forming a vertical ESD device having enhanced ESD performance.
Abstract:
A method of assembling a plastic article includes laser welding a first laser absorbent part having a first surface finish and a second laser transparent part with a second surface finish that is different than the first surface finish. The first part includes a surface finish that is textured and grained. The second part includes a substantially smooth non-textured surface finish. One of the first and second parts includes a carbon black dye that provides a desired black color. The other of the first and second parts does not include the black dye but instead utilizes another dark colored dye. The carbon black dye provides for the part to be laser absorbent and the other type of dye is utilized to provide a substantially similar appearance in a laser transparent part.
Abstract:
An intercooler assembly includes a housing that defines an internal space containing a plurality of tubes. A joint between a tube and a tube plate is created by a laser welding process. A form presses the walls of the tube outwardly to form the flange. The downward force of the form not only creates the desired flange, but also exerts a pressure that holds the flange against the tube plate. The form provides for the transmission of laser energy to that the creation of the flange can be performed concurrently with the welding process.
Abstract:
An air induction system for an internal combustion engine. The system includes an air cleaner having an air intake and an intake manifold for distributing air to cylinders of the engine. A throttle body installed in a neck portion of the manifold is also provided, wherein the throttle body serves to regulate a flow of air to the manifold. In addition, the system includes a hose for providing air from the air cleaner to the manifold and the throttle body, wherein the hose includes a first end which is affixed to both the throttle body and the manifold. The first end also includes sealing elements for sealing the throttle body and the manifold.
Abstract:
An HQ tube arrangement suitable for packaging within a vehicle includes a first passageway having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet and a second passageway located adjacent the first passageway. The second passageway is fluidly connected to the first passageway at first and second spaced apart junctions with the second passageway being divided by the junctions into first, second and third passages. The second passageway includes first and second opposing terminal ends respectively spaced from the first and second junctions wherein portions of the first, second and third passageways are oriented in a substantially similar direction to that of the first passageway to form a substantially rectangular configuration.
