    摘要: A method of performing angular distraction osteogenesis by drilling bone-pin holes into the first and second sides of a segmented bone, inserting bone-pins into the bone-pin holes, attaching the bone-pins in each side of the segmented bone to a distraction device and adjusting the distraction devise so that the bone portion of the first side of the segmented bone angularly adjusts, rotates or pivots its position relative to the bone portion on the second side of the segmented bone in precise, gradual and predetermined incremental amounts over a period of time so that the bone tissue remains healthy and the blood vessels and nerve endings remain intact during the bending distraction process. A device for achieving angular distraction osteogenesis is provided having a support member extending across a segmented piece of bone, means for securing the first side of the segmented bone to the support member and the second side of the segmented bone to the support member, and means for angularly adjusting the first section of segmented bone relative to the second section of segmented bone. The angular adjustment means includes a gear and a cooperating adjustment screw which rotates the gear when the screw is adjusted in order to easily angularly adjust or rotate the support member or the means for securing the segmented bone pieces to the support member in precise, small incremental predetermined amounts over a period of time. The means for securing the segmented bone pieces to the support member include bone-pin clamps which can be adjusted linearly or translated in precise, gradual and incremental distances along the length of the support member. In one embodiment, the device has two arms, a central joint for angularly adjusting the two arms and two bone-pin clamps for attaching at least one bone-pin on each side of the segmented bone to a respective arm. The arms are attached to the central joint and angularly adjust or rotate in planes that are oriented different from one another and perhaps perpendicularly and the bone-pin clamps linearly translate along each arm.

    摘要: An implant comprising a specially adapted bone screw having a threaded shank portion and a sleeve which mates with and operates in cooperation with the threaded shank portion is provided. Also provided is a driver specially adapted for inserting and removing the implant of the invention. A method of compressing a fracture in a bone is also provided. The implant generates bone compression by itself and can be used either alone or with plates and washers. It is easily inserted into a fracture and also is easily removed from the fracture. The driver which is specially adapted to be used in combination with the implant of the invention aids in the ease of insertion and removal of the implant.

    摘要: A ratcheting compression device is provided which is very strong, which can be customized in length, which can be retightened periodically to maintain compression, which allows precise placement and alignment of bones with both grossly tuned compression and finely tuned compression, and in which only a limited inventory of parts is required. The two-piece compression device comprises (a) a novel first piece having a bone screw located at a first end thereof and having a ratcheting member located near the second end thereof and comprising teeth having their crests lying substantially in a plane and (b) a novel second piece comprising an anti-rotation member which acts in cooperation with the ratcheting member of the first piece to compress two segments of bone together. In yet other embodiments, two embodiments of a driver are provided for quickly driving the stop onto the ratcheting member to a desired extent. In a further embodiment, a customized method for compressing and fixing a first bone segment and a second bone segment together is provided.

    摘要: A method of implanting a threaded tapered screw into a substrate having a hardness less than the hardness of the screw comprises: (a) drilling a pilot hole with a drill having substantially the same taper as the taper of the tapered screw, so as to provide a pilot hole having no threads therein; (b) inserting the tapered screw into the pilot hole (preferably by merely dropping the screw into the pilot hole); and then (c) further advancing the tapered threaded screw into the pilot hole. The method requires only a minimal amount of strength to insert the screw into the hole, is preferably used to secure a bioabsorbable screw within bone, is very quickly and efficiently done without any extra step of tapping or cutting threads within the hole, invades or disrupts the bone structure only minimally, and requires no screw-holding forceps for stabilizing the screw. The tapered threaded bioabsorbable screw is self-centering and self-aligning and is itself a novel tapered screw especially suitable for use in orthopedics for implantation into bone. The screw has a taper and preferably has threads having rounded crests, has a slot for ease of insertion, has a single thread pitch, and is bioabsorbable.
