Abstract:
Methods of modulating tackiness of a substrate bearing an adhesive. The method includes modulating the tackiness of a layer of adhesive by subjecting the layer of the adhesive to radiant output from a radiation source. At least a portion of the radiant output has a wavelength of less than 200 nanometers.
Abstract:
A method for building three-dimensional articles using a thermal polymerization process in provided. The articles are built by using a composition that includes a thermally polymerizable composition, a thermal initiator, and a nonlinear light-to-heat conversion material such as a reverse saturable dye. The article is built by the sequential exposure of adjacent voxels with a laser beam. Microlens arrays can be used to expose more than one voxel at a time.
Abstract:
An adhesive masking article for shielding a protected work surface from a coating applied to a surface adjacent the protected work surface includes a backing layer having first and second opposed major surfaces, and at least one edge, an adhesive on at least a portion of at least one of the first and second backing layer opposed major surfaces, and a barrier inducing treatment on at least an edge surface of the masking article to contact the coating when the coating contacts the edge of the backing layer, thereby causing a barrier to form along the edge of the masking article that impedes the migration of the coating past the edge of the masking article beneath the masking article.

A microstructured antimicrobial film, an antimicrobial film assembly, a method of protecting a surface from microbial contamination, and a method of making a microstructured antimicrobial film. The microstructured antimicrobial film can include a substrate having a first side that includes a first major surface, a plurality of microstructured wells defined in the first side of the substrate, and an antimicrobial material positioned within at least some of the plurality of wells. Each of the plurality of wells can be at least partially defined by a base that is spaced a distance from the first major surface of the substrate. The antimicrobial material can be positioned, such that an upper surface of the antimicrobial material is spaced a distance from the first major surface of the substrate. The antimicrobial film assembly can include a roll or a stack of microstructured antimicrobial films.
Abstract:
Inkjet printing apparatus for use with radiation curable ink includes a sensor for sensing the amount of radiation emitted by a source of radiation. A controller is connected to the sensor and is operable to vary the amount of radiation emitted by the radiation source in accordance with a signal received from the sensor. A drive mechanism moves the source of radiation to a location laterally offset from the substrate where the sensor is positioned.
Abstract:
A two-step method of polymerizing a composition containing a free radical photoinitiator includes the sequential steps of exposing the composition to a first radiation source having a maximum spectral output occurring at a wavelength of greater than 300 nm and, thereafter, exposing the composition to a second radiation source having a maximum spectral output occurring at a wavelength of less than 300 nm.
Abstract:
Coating system and method that allows coatings to be formed from a wide variety of coatable compositions that are entirely free of any solvents or, alternatively, have relatively little solvent in minor amounts effective to help dissolve one or more components of such compositions. A fluid composition is atomized and contacted with a carrier gas. The contacting occurs under conditions such that vaporization of substantially all of the atomized fluid composition occurs so as to form a vapor having a condensation temperature. The vapor is caused to flow to the surface of the substrate. The surface is at a temperature below the condensation temperature of the vapor. Consequently, the vapor condenses onto the surface to form the coating.
Abstract:
Methods of producing release coatings, adhesives, primers, and other polymeric coatings are described. A method for producing a release coating on a substrate comprises the steps of applying a polymerizable composition comprising a free radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated polysiloxane to a surface of a substrate, and exposing the polymerizable composition to a monochromatic light source having a peak intensity at a wavelength of between about 160 nanometers to 240 nanometers to form a release coating. Methods for producing a pressure sensitive adhesive and other polymeric coatings using a monochromatic light source are also described.
Abstract:
A composite article comprising a fibrillated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) matrix, electrically conductive particles, and energy expandable, electrically nonconductive hollow polymeric particles, which composite is conductive and allows for the flow of electricity and which, upon attaining a temperature which causes expansion of the expandable polymeric particles, becomes insulating and causes the flow of electricity to cease. The articles are thin and can be used as electrical circuit breaking elements.
Abstract:
A metallic toner fluid composition that contains (A) electrostatically charged, colloidal elemental metal particles dispersed in an electrically nonconductive organic carrier liquid having a dielectric constant less than about 3.5 and a volume resistivity greater than about 10.sup.12 ohm-cm, (B) a soluble surfactant in an amount sufficient to charge and stabilize the colloidal metal dispersion, and (C) an effective amount of organosol particles and/or a soluble polymer that is not a soluble surfactant (B). Also disclosed is a substrate coated with elemental metallic toner fluid particles. The coated substrate can act as a donor substrate for thermal mass transfer of images to a secondary receiving substrate by performing either or both of the following steps, in any order:(a) transferring the elemental metal coating from the primary substrate to the secondary receiving substrate;(b) contacting the elemental metal coated primary or secondary substrate with an electroless metal plating solution.
