    摘要: The invention provides a method for treating and/or preventing vaginal infections, such as trichomonas vaginitis, by administering a sugar alcohol-polyol to a subject in need of treatment. Particularly suitable sugar alcohol-polyols are pentitol and hexitol polyols, such as xylitol, arabitol/arabinitol, adonitol, ribitol, glycerol, dulcitol, inositol, mannitol and sorbitol. A composition containing a sugar alcohol-polyol for treating vaginal infections is also disclosed. It has been found that sugar alcohol-polyols are capable of selectively inhibiting the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite that causes one of the most common vaginal infections, trichomonas vaginitis, while not inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus, the dominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal ecosystem. Sugar alcohol-polyols are safe and cost-effective, and can be used alone, with other polyols or incorporated into different vaginal health products to treat and/or prevent trichomonas vaginitis.

    摘要: An antimicrobial composition that contains an antimicrobial agent and a sugar alcohol is provided. The sugar alcohol is more generally more biocompatible and biodegradable than the antimicrobial agent. In addition, without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that sugar alcohols increase the attraction of the antimicrobial agent to microorganisms (e.g., the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria). Because a greater percentage of the antimicrobial agent molecules are brought into contact with the microorganisms, the efficiency of growth inhibition is increased. Thus, the antimicrobial composition provides good efficacy without the need for high levels of an antimicrobial agent.

    摘要: The invention provides a method for treating and/or preventing a wide scope of vaginal and vulval infections, such as those caused by bacteria, parasites or yeasts, by administering gallic acid to a subject in need of treatment. A composition containing gallic acid for treating vaginal infections is also disclosed. It has been found that gallic acid is capable of selectively inhibiting the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite that causes trichomonas vaginitis; Gardnerella vaginalis, a bacterium that causes bacterial vaginosis; and Candida albicans, a yeast that causes candidiasis and vulvitis; while not inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus, the dominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal ecosystem. Gallic acid is safe and cost-effective, and can be used alone or incorporated into different vaginal health products to treat and/or prevent vaginal infections.

    摘要: There is provided compositions and methods to inhibit the adherence of pathogenic microorganisms to cells. The composition includes water soluble PEO/PEG polymers which may be hydrophilic or amphiphilic block copolymers. One example of a suitable composition is polyethylene glycol or polyethylene oxide with a chemical formula of H—(OCH2CH2)n-OH. Another example of a suitable composition is amphiphilic block copolymer with a chemical formula PEOm-Xp-PEOn, where PEO is —(OCH2CH2)n-O and X is PPO(—(OCH2CH2CH2)m-), or PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), or PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), or PBO (polybutylene oxide). The pathogenic microorganism may be a bacterial, fungal, viral or trichomonial pathogen and the composition prevents adherence of the pathogenic microorganism in, for example, a urogenital tract of a mammal and aids in reducing malodor generation. The composition may be applied to vaginal health products like, for example, moisturizer, gel, jelly, cream, insert (tablet), ointment, foam. The composition may also be applied to a feminine hygiene product, like, for example, a tampon, feminine pad, feminine wipe or panty liners.
