摘要: A laser optical fiber storage device (10,100) for temporarily storing a free end (12a) of an elongated flexible laser optical fiber (12). A storage housing (14,114) with an open end (116) has an elongated flexible tube (28,128) disposed therein to receive the elongated flexible laser optical fiber so as to prevent laser light from escaping the storage housing. A restrictor (32, 117a, 117b) within the storage housing reduces the inner diameter of the elongated flexible tube. Further, a laser optical fiber storage device (40,100) for temporarily storing a free end (12a) of an elongated flexible laser optical fiber (12) is provided with a clamp (42,123). The storage housing (41,114) has an open end (41a, 116) and an elongated flexible tube (28,128) disposed within the storage housing to receive the elongated flexible laser optical fiber so as to prevent laser light from escaping the storage housing. A laser fiber clamp (42,123) is mounted to the open end to secure the laser optical fiber.

摘要: A method of determining a refund on a communications network The method comprises the steps of allowing a user to request responses to a query through the medium of the communications network in return for a fee paid by the user. A selected time the request for responses terminates, and a determination is made of whether to give a refund to the user. The determination is based or a criterium on criteria independent of the user.

摘要: The invention consists in a computer network based method for rating persons who rate rateable factors. The method comprising the steps of providing a reward to a person making a rating of a rateable factor. The quantum of the reward is adjusted according to at least one criteria, which may be at least one of, promptness of the submission of the rating, to what extent the persons rating deviates from the average rating by other persons to the same rateable factor, and to what extent that persons rating deviates from the average rating of similar rateable factors in the past.

摘要: An automatic optical power management system for use with an optical communications system includes a light source residing in a first circuit pack and adapted to emit light at a nominal power level only absent receipt of an indicator signifying a loss of signal resulting from a fiber discontinuity relating to the first optical fiber, wherein the nominal power level is of sufficient magnitude to violate laser safety guidelines in the event of the fiber discontinuity. A redundant detection system includes a first optical detector residing in the first circuit pack, and a second optical detector residing in a second circuit pack that is optically adjacent to the first circuit. A redundant response system communicates an indicator signifying loss of signal from the first and second optical detectors to the light source upon detection of loss of signal by either detector.

摘要: An iterative process is used to set the phase prechirp of a WDM optical transport system to a system's optimal level that maximizes the signal quality. A signal degradation factor takes into account linear and non-linear effects along the optical path and is used as a receive end feedback signal to control the phase prechirp level at the transmitter site. By using the FEC corrected errors rate as the feedback signal, optimization of signal quality is performed even when the system is running error free. By using an adaptive phase prechirp transmitter, signal degradation compensation can be also performed on a per wavelength basis to compensate for the residual dispersion slope and to allow optimization of individual channels independently of the net link dispersion value. This method provides more flexibility when using optical switching in core networks, as it allows path optimization to new physical link connectivity, without requiring any change to the optical components such that, significant signal degradation tuning range for a WDM optical transport system is provided.

摘要: An antigenic pharmaceutical composition is provided comprising Protective Antigen (PA) and Lethal Factor (LF), wherein said PA and/or LF lacks a functional binding site, thereby preventing said PA and LF from binding together via said binding site or thereby preventing said PA from binding to a native PA cell receptor via said binding site, and wherein said composition is substantially non-toxic to animal cells. The composition is for preventing or minimising anthrax toxicity in mammals, preferably in humans. Also provided are DNA and RNA based vaccines encoding the antigenic components of said pharmaceutical composition. The present specification also describes antibodies that bind to at least one of PA, LF or EF, which binding thereby prevents:—(i) PA from binding to LF or EF, or to a native PA cell receptor; or (ii) LF from binding to PA; or (iii) EF from binding to PA.
