摘要: A premix for hog feed and a method of feeding a hog that produces DHA and EPA enriched pork while avoiding or reducing negative effects to the taste, color, texture, aroma, pH and shelf life which are significant enough to make the pork unacceptable to consumers. One embodiment of the method of feeding a hog involves feeding a hog over several days with a hog feed supplemented with the premix. The premix includes marine-sourced docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and plant-sourced alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The hogs are fed until their total DHA, EPA and ALA intakes are in a certain range per kilogram of the hog's weight. The hogs are then slaughtered and processed into pork products. This results in pork with an enrichment of omega-3 EFAs in the range of about 2.5% to about 4.5% of fat.

摘要: Provided herein are apparatus and methods relating to the development of instrumentation for high throughput network electrophysiology and cellular analysis. More specifically, provided herein are multiwell microelectrode arrays (MEAs) and methods for the development of such an apparatus in an inexpensive fashion with a flexible, ANSI/SBS-compliant (American National Standards Institute/Society for Biomolecular Screening) format. Microelectrode arrays are a grid of tightly spaced microelectrodes useful for stimulating and sensing electrically active cells, networks and tissue. The techniques described herein relate to the use of microfabrication in combination with certain large-area processes that have been employed to achieve multiwell MEAs in ANSI/SBS-compliant culture well formats, which are also transparent for inverted/backside microscopy compatibility. These multiwell MEAs can be used to investigate two and three-dimensional networks of electrically active cells and tissue such as cardiac, neural, and muscular in a high throughput fashion. Also being ANSI/SBS-compliant, they are compatible with machinery and robotics developed for the pharmaceutical industry for drug screening applications.

摘要: A system for tracking and locating surgical items and objects in an operating room environment that incorporates two-stage functionality. A first stage provides mechanisms for tracking objects using radio frequency (RF) tags that are positioned on or in conjunction with every surgical item and object so as to be tracked by a number of RF transceivers located about the operating room. In addition to integrating RF ID components, the tags integrate hard spherical components that are easily identifiable by ultrasonic detection. If an object is “lost” from the tracking system functionality (RF tracking), the system operator may review a last known location and movement path presented on a display and thereafter utilize an ultrasonic sub-system in a localized area to detect the exact location of the missing object or item. Narrowing the location of a “lost” object is facilitated by the use of one or more LED laser pointers that are directed through the last known path of the object and to its last known location.

摘要: A passive desuperheater for a vapor compression refrigeration system is disclosed. The passive desuperheater includes a chamber having two inlets and an outlet, the first inlet for introducing superheated gas into the chamber, the second inlet for introducing cool liquid refrigerant into the chamber and the outlet for outputting the desuperheated gas. The flow of cool liquid refrigerant into the chamber is generated by a gravity drop, resulting in the mixing of the liquid refrigerant with the superheated gas, such that desuperheated gas is output at the outlet. In an alternative embodiment, the hot discharge gas is input through the bottom of a shell and tube condenser and then exposed to the cool liquid refrigerant in the condenser. The desuperheater according to the present invention also can be used to remove oil from the hot discharge gas during desuperheating. Desuperheating can also be obtained by passing the superheated gas through a pipe immersed in the cool liquid refrigerant.

摘要: The apparatus includes contact blades at different elevations on a utility pole rotatable between electrical connection and disconnection positions vis-a-vis contact members. To rotate the contact blades, an electromechanical linear actuator extends a clevis and crank arm to rotate a vertically extending shaft coupled to another crank and a lever arm to rotate the insulators on which the contact blades are mounted. The linear actuators are carried by support structure high on the utility pole and, by rotating the vertical shafts, the insulators and contact blades at each phase are simultaneously rotated.

摘要: Apparatus and processes are disclosed that provide a microfabricated microtool having a mechanically actuated manipulating mechanism. The microtool comprises a tweezer having flexible arms, and an actuating mechanism. A biological, electrical, or mechanical component is grasped, cut, sensed, or measured by the flexible arms. The actuating mechanism requires no electric power and is achieved by the reciprocating motion of a smooth, rigid microstructure applied against the flexible arms of the microtool. In certain implementations, actuator motion is controlled distally by a tethered cable. A process is also disclosed for producing a microtool, and in particular, by micropatterning. Photolithography may be used to form micro-molds that pattern the microtool or components of the microtool. In certain implementations, the tweezer and actuating mechanism are produced fully assembled. In other implementations, the tweezer and actuating mechanism are produced separately and assembled together.
