Process for the preparation of sulpho-free triphenylmethane dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 -R.sup.3 denote hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, preferably methyl, or halogen, preferably chlorine,Y denotes hydrogen or NX.sup.5 X.sup.6,X.sup.1 -X.sup.6 denote hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, preferably methyl, ethyl, benzyl or phenyl andZ.sup.- denotes an anionby oxidation of their leuco products with manganese dioxide, characterized in that, after the oxidation is completed, manganese hydroxide or manganese carbonate and the carbinol base of the dyestuff are formed by the addition of hydroxide or carbonate, during or after which the carbinol base is taken up in a water-immiscible solvent, separated off from the manganese hydroxide or manganese carbonate and from the water phase, the solution is mixed with the acid HZ which may have been mixed with water, the solvent is either distilled off before the mixing or separated or distilled off after the mixing, and the dyestuff is isolated as a solution or in solid form after evaporation or crystallization.

Optical brighteners of the formula ##STR1## wherein B denotes a direct bond or the 1,4-phenylene radical andR.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently of one another denote hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, or together form a fused aromatic ring,or the quaternisation products and protonation products thereof, are outstandingly suitable for the white tinting of polyester fibres or acrylic fibres. Dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R.sub.1 is a straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl, or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; R.sub.2 is aryl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen, straight-chain alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, straight-chain alkenyl or alkinyl of 3-6 carbon atoms or aralkyl; An is an anion; and the cyclic and acyclic radicals can be further substituted by non-ionic substituents. These dyestuffs are suitable for dyeing and printing of natural and synthetic materials, particularly of polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile with other vinyl compounds, of acid modified polyesters and acid modified polyamides.
