The system includes containers separately accessible by one or more pumps for mixture of the solutions in a container immediately before administration to a peritoneal cavity of a patient. Alternatively, the system and method allow for direct administration of the mixed solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient without intermediate mixing thereof. The solutions may be mixed in predetermined ratios as input to the system prior to delivery.

The present invention provides devices and methods for stabilizing bicarbonate-based solutions for peritoneal dialysis or hemofiltration. The bicarbonate-based solutions of the present invention are formulated and stored in at least two parts—an alkaline bicarbonate concentrate and an acidic concentrate. The alkaline bicarbonate concentrate is adjusted to have a pH of about 8.6 to 10.0. The acidic concentrate is adjusted to have a stable, acidic pH ranging from about 1.0 to 3.0. Upon mixing, although some variation in the pH of the mixed bicarbonate solution exists, the inventors have discovered that with the appropriate selection of the parameters of the concentrates, the pH of the mixed solution is always within an acceptable physiological range.

Stable single bicarbonate-based solutions are provided. The bicarbonate-based single solution of the present invention includes at least calcium and bicarbonate and is stored or packaged in a sterile manner within a container with a gas barrier. The single solutions of the present invention can remain stable for three months or more. In this regard, the stable and single bicarbonate-based solutions of the present invention can be readily and effectively used during medical therapy, such as dialysis therapy.
