    摘要: An alkoxylation catalyst for causing an alkylene oxide to react with an organic compound having one or more active hydrogen, comprising magnesium oxide modified by the addition of at least one metal ion selected from the group consisting of Al.sup.3+, Ga.sup.3+, In.sup.3+, Tl.sup.3+, Co.sup.3+, Sc.sup.3+, La.sup.3+, and Mn.sup.2+. In the presence of the catalyst, an addition polymerization reaction between the alkylene oxide and the organic compound having one or more active hydrogen such as an alcohol or phenol can be performed with only small amounts of unreacted material and byproducts, and the alkylene oxide adduct having a very narrow alkylene oxide adduct distribution can be obtained.

    摘要: Disclosed is a method for producing at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid from an alcohol in a liquid phase through a simple process. Namely, at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is produced by dehydrating and oxidizing an alcohol in a liquid phase at 110 to 250° C. in the presence of molecular oxygen and a noble metal-containing catalyst. Alternatively, at least one of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is produced by dehydrating and oxidizing an alcohol in a liquid phase in the presence of molecular oxygen, a noble metal-containing catalyst, and an acidic substance.

    摘要: A polarizing apparatus extracts light amount of which is increased by incidence of light (10, 12) having a plurality of planes of polarization, and by aligning the planes of polarization. This polarizing apparatus can be used as a polarizer for a liquid crystal display device (optical transducer), or can be disposed as a preliminary stage before a polarizer. Molecules of an optically active material (1) rotates the plane of polarization through an optical rotation angle &thgr;1 when a first vector component 10 of light having a horizontal plane of polarization passes, and rotates the plane of polarization through an optical rotation angle &thgr;2 (>&thgr;1) when a second vector component of light having a vertical plane of polarization passes. Therefore, light having a horizontal plane of polarization is amplified, and light having a vertical plane of polarization is reduced. To bestow the anisotropy of the optical rotation angle on the large number of molecules making up the optically active material molecular constituents of the optically active material are substantially aligned in three dimensions. By this means, the efficiency of use of the incident light can be increased, and a brighter display can be obtained, or the power consumption of the light source can be reduced.
