An improved instrument for the precise measurement of interfacial tension between two fluid phases by means of a drop of the less dense fluid surrounded by the more dense fluid, both fluids spinning together in gyrostatic equilibrium. Elements of the invention eliminate departures from gyrostatic equilibrium which went unrecognized in the prior art. These elements are based on hydrodynamic principles unknown in the prior art. The instrument is characterized by the combined use of air bearings and sample-holder mountings which reduce vibrations and eccentricities, eliminate temperature gradients within the sample, and assure that interfering hydrodynamic flows are suppressed. Other improvements include biprecision sample tube, full visual access to the spinning drop, leveling provisions, timing belt transmission, avoidance of bearing heating and wear problems, and convenient control of sample temperature.

A method and instrument for continuous monitoring of an aerosol as the sulfur content of atmospheric aerosols. The instrument has an electrostatic precipitator that is turned off and on at a given frequency to modulate the particle concentration of aerosol flowing through the precipitator. A total sulfur flame photometric detector sensitive to both gaseous and particulate sulfur receives a sample of the modulated aerosol from the precipitator. The modulated particle concentration of the aerosol supplied to the detector causes a fluctuating component in the detector output that is directly related to the sulfur particle concentration. This component is amplified by a frequency and phase sensitive lock-in amplifier tuned to the precipitator modulation frequency. The resulting output signal gives a continuous measure of the sulfur particle concentration entering the instrument.

A method of isolating and purifying natural, unaltered, undenatured immune gamma globulin (IgG) for intravenous administration and albumin from animal blood plasma, especially human, and the resulting products. The method involves the initial stabilization of plasma by treatment with silica, or the use of previously stabilized plasma. IgG and albumin are isolated from the stabilized plasma by chromatographic reaction with sterile ion exchange resin and eluted by adjustment of pH and ionic strength. The products are concentrated, purified further and packaged. They are characterized by high yield and high purity. They are unfragmented and unaggregated, i.e., natural preparation.

Non-invasive imaging methods and minimally invasive sensing methods are used for assessing the viability of cells implanted in the central nervous system for therapeutic purposes and for detecting the transformation of such cells, including embryonic stem cells, into brain tumors. In particular, the present invention provides an imaging means for differentiating normal cell proliferation and angiogenesis following a cell implant from abnormal tumor growth and neovascularization associated with teratoma-inducing implanted embryonic stem cells.
