    摘要: Novel devices which can be used to both collect blood samples from and administer medical fluids to a patient on a repeated and continual basis using one rather than multiple needle insertions. The device typically includes a main tubing segment confluently connected to a cannula for insertion in the patient's vein. A syringe port and a volumeter for collecting blood branch separately from the main tubing segment. The device is used to collect blood by attaching an empty blood collection syringe to the syringe port, inserting the cannula in the patient's vein, allowing passive flow of blood from the main tubing segment into the volumeter under intrinsic venous blood pressure and capillary action, and then facilitating active flow of blood from the volumeter into the blood collection syringe by extending the syringe plunger. The device may be used to administer medical fluids to the patient through the main tubing segment from a medical fluid syringe or catheter attached to the syringe port.

    摘要: The invention generally relates to a needle assembly of the kind having a needle, an elongate blunting device, a shifting member, and a flash chamber. The needle is of the kind that has a needle proximal end, a sharp needle distal end and a needle cannula extending therethrough. The shifting member can be actuated to move relative to the needle and, upon movement relative to the needle, causes movement to the elongate blunting device from a retracted position wherein the blunting device distal end is retracted into the needle cannula so that the sharp needle distal end can penetrate the body, to an extended position wherein the blunting device distal end extends out of the needle cannula so as to prevent the sharp needle distal end from penetrating the body.

    摘要: An integral catheter and blood tester includes a needle unit which is receivable within a conventional catheter intravenous tube and housing. The catheter supports a piercing needle and interior chamber. A transparent tester housing is coupled to the needle unit and supports a test strip and test patch which extends into the flash chamber of the catheter needle. A constricting valve surrounds the test strip to maintain closure of the flash chamber. Once the catheter and needle have been inserted into the desired blood vessel, a quantity of blood is introduced into the flash chamber so as to wet the test patch. The test patch may, for example, include conventional litmus material used to test the pH of the test sample. Once the flash process is complete, the needle and tester housing are withdrawn from the catheter to permit conventional intravenous coupling to the catheter. Thereafter, the tester housing is separable from the needle unit to permit discarding of the needle unit. The separation process causes the test strip to be wiped substantially clean of excess blood by the constricting valve. The tester housing provides a protective clear shield about the contaminated test patch which facilitates visual examination thereof while precluding inadvertent contact with the blood contaminated test patch.

    摘要: A device for determining the location of the wall of an artery in a living being via a percutaeous incision or puncture. The device comprises an elongated tubular member having a distal end portion, a proximal end portion, and a passageway extending therethrough for receipt of a guide wire. The device is inserted through an introducer sheath having an open distal end into said percutaneous incision or puncture over said guide wire so its distal end portion is located within the artery and its proximal end portion is located outside of the body of the being. The has two liquid entrance ports in its distal end portion and one liquid outlet port in its proximal end portion. The liquid entrance ports and outlet port are in communication with each other through the device's passageway. When the device is positioned within the introducer sheath and the entrance ports are located beyond the open distal end of the introducer sheath and within the artery blood flows into the entrance ports through passageway and out through the outlet port so that it can be observed. The device and introducer sheath are then retracted until the flow of blood out of the outlet port stops, thereby indicating the location of the artery wall.
