Abstract:
A concentric ring target detector receives input pixel data from an optical scanning device. The pixel data represents images on a conveyor belt and moving objects bearing information-encoded labels which are advanced by the conveyor belt. Input pixel data is alternately applied to a pair of FIFO blocks, one of such blocks receiving odd and even pixels from scan line N, the other of the blocks receiving pixels from scan line N-1. Pixels from the FIFO blocks are coupled through a pixel switch to a multi-tap first-in first-out block. Each FIFO block applies data to the pixel switch at one-half the rate at which it was received by the FIFO block to maintain constant throughput without the FIFO's overflowing or emptying. The pixel switch ensures that the pixels from scan lines N and N-1 remain in serial order. Pixels from scan line N and N-1 are shifted through a multi-tap FIFO. The multi-tap FIFO has a plurality of taps that enable reading of each pixel written to the multi-tap FIFO as the pixels are shifted through the FIFO. Various one of the tap outputs are coupled to a pair of template correlators. The image frame represented by the pixels applied to the template correlators are compared to templates in the correlators. The templates represent an image of a concentric ring acquisition target disposed on an information-encoded label. If either template correlator recognizes a predetermined correlation threshold, a detection signal is applied to a detection gate causing a detection signal line to activate at a point where the coordinates of the center of the concentric rings disposed on the information encoded label can be determined.
Abstract:
A sorting system for sorting packages at high speed to a large number of destinations by automation. The sorting system provides a feeding mechanism for depositing flat packages in an upright position on a conveying system. The conveying system includes lower and upper conveyors for supporting the package. Ejection modules are included along the length of the conveying system for guiding as well as ejecting individual packages along the conveying system. The ejection module extends around the items to prevent falling of the items in a first position, and breaks away from the around the article when a plunger pushes the article from the path.
Abstract:
An apparatus for mechanized loading and unloading, having an insertable pallet that may be tilted around its longitudinal axis and that can be moved horizontally and vertically. The pallet has a live conveyor for advancing a package along the pallet. Also a method for acquiring packages from a stack of packages with a mechanical loader having a pallet, including the steps of (a) vertically translating the pallet to the height of the package to be acquired, (b) tilting the pallet around the longitudinal axis so that the angle of the pallet roughly matches the angle of the bottom of the package to be acquired, (c) horizontally translating the pallet so that a front edge of the pallet is inserted into a seam between the package to be acquired and the other packages in the stack, and (d) advancing the package to be acquired along the pallet.
Abstract:
An apparatus for illumination and imaging of a surface includes an apparatus for illuminating the surface, an apparatus for obtaining an image of the illuminated surface and providing an output signal representative of the obtained image, and an apparatus for limiting the exposure time of the image-obtaining apparatus to a selected fast exposure time less than the video frame rate of the image-obtaining apparatus. The image-obtaining apparatus may be a CCD-based camera. The CCD-based camera and the illumination apparatus may be mounted in a shroud having an opaque side wall. A first polarizing film may be provided intermediate the illumination apparatus and the surface, and a second polarizing film, having a polarization orientation orthogonal to that of the first polarizing film, may be provided intermediate the surface and the image-obtaining apparatus. Tip switches may be provided to prevent activation of the illumination apparatus and the image obtaining apparatus except when a lower edge of the shroud side wall is in contact with the surface.
Abstract:
An automatic system for sorting items, such as small parcels, into groups bound for different geographical locations is described. The system uses tilting trays arranged at multiple levels, with all the trays being mounted on carriages traveling on a single monorail. The trays are tilted at the proper output chutes by cam roller mechanisms which are appropriately inserted into the path of cams on the trays under the coordination of a digital controller. A simple drive mechanism moves the carriages along the monorail using a drive roller which presses against the carriages. The carriages may be linked by a pliable linkage assembly that does not include mechanical hinges or like mechanisms. The system is easy to repair and operates at low noise levels.
Abstract:
An automatic system for sorting items such as small, elongate parcels into groups for different geographical locations. The system uses tilting trays, suspended from a track, with the trays being suspended from at least two carriages. The trays are tilted at the proper output chutes by cam roller mechanisms which are appropriately inserted into the path of cams on the trays under the coordination of a digital controller. A simple drive mechanism moves the carriages along the monorail using a drive roller which presses against the top of the carriages. The carriages may be linked by a pliable linkage assembly that does not include mechanical hinges or like mechanisms. The system is easy to repair and operates at low noise levels.
Abstract:
An automatic system for sorting items, such as small parcels, into groups bound for different geographical locations is described. The system includes a carriage for traveling along a track, the carriage having an adjustment feature such that it may continuously be held against the track. The carriage also provides a tilt tray in which packages are presented on a convex surface. The convex surface causes the package to be destabilized, so they may be quickly discharged from the tilt tray.
Abstract:
The system has an optical scanning device formed of a plurality of pixel elements for providing a scan output signal representative of a scanned region of an object. The system has a reflector, an illumination source, a light compensator, and an object positioner. The reflector defines an ellipse. The object positioner disposes the object substantially near the major axis of the ellipse. The illumination source emits and applies light energy to the object disposed at a first focus of the ellipse. The light compensator, which varies the light energy emitted from the illumination source, has one or more dedicated pixels of the optical scanning device. The light compensator also has fiber optical transmitters that receive light transmitted from the illumination source and couple to the dedicated pixels, which are unavailable for receiving reflected light from the scanned region of the object.
Abstract:
Robotic hand includes retractable paddles for supporting an article and a vertically-movable top paddle for engaging an upper surface of the article. The top paddle is mounted on an upper free end of a band of sheet-like material, which may be extended above the top surface of a housing of the robotic hand. Inflatable bladders in the retractable paddles have a relatively high coefficient of friction, and the top surface of the paddles has relatively low coefficient of friction. A force sensor may be provided in the lower surface of the top paddles.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for weighing an object in which the object is moved to, and tipped over, a tip point. A signal representative of the weight of the object is generated as the object is tipped over the tip point. The apparatus may include a conveyor for moving the object toward the tip point, which may be supported by a load sensor that generates the signals representative of the object weight.
