Abstract:
A removable foam backed carpet may be prepared by laminating a non-woven scrim, having a cohesive strength less than the cohesive strength of the foam, to the back of a foam backed carpet. The foam backed carpet is gelled, crushed and vulcanized to produce a resilient backing having a good delamination strength. The carpet is particularly useful when it is cut into tiles. The carpet tile may be easily removed to install wiring of if wear is excessive.
Abstract:
Woven pile fabrics, particularly upholstery fabrics and corduroy, characterized by a superior balance of strength and softness are backcoated utilizing an aqueous emulsion prepared by the emulsion polymerization of: 30 to 50% by weight of a vinyl ester of an alkanoic acid; 10 to 30% by weight ethylene; 30 to 50% by weight of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 alkyl acrylate; 1 to 5% by weight of copolymerizable N-methylol containing monomer; 0 to 4% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 0 to 1% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated comonomer.
Abstract:
A thin tough glossy surface may be applied to a flexible substrate in a one step process comprising: applying an aqueous thin film of a compound of a polymer to an endless carrier belt made of a material having a low adhesion to said polymer, contacting the flexible substrate and coated carrier belt and keeping them together while they pass around a hot drum laminator at a temperature of from about 100.degree. to about 150.degree. C.The process is suitable for applying impermeable surfaces to non wovens, and foam backed carpet.
Abstract:
A self-adhesive wall covering or the like that is easily removable from a wall. The wall convering consists essentially of a laminate structure formed of a layer of fabric having a visible pattern on one side and an acrylic-saturated paper adhesively fixed to the other side. A layer of PVA adhesive is coated onto the acrylic-saturated paper and a layer of release paper is secured to the PVA adhesive as protection and to prevent inadvertent adhesion of the laminate wall covering to a surface. When the release paper is removed, the PVA adhesive is exposed and serves as the medium by which the wall covering adheres to the wall.
Abstract:
A heat-shrinkable backing material, which preferably is a spun-bonded polyolefin backing material, is tufted with a relatively heat stable yarn and the tufted backing is subjected to a temperature of not less than 300.degree. F. The applied temperature induces the tufted backing to shrink, thereby increasing the tuft density by not less than about 130% so as to produce an unbacked, densely tufted carpet tile. A secondary backing is then applied to provide a stable structure.

Abstract:
An improved process is provided for making tufted carpets having bonded nonwoven fabric secondary backings. After the secondary backing has been laminated to a back-sized and tufted primary backing to form a carpet composite, the composite is passed through a nip to emboss the secondary backing and provide a less stiff, easier to install carpet.
Abstract:
An improved woven synthetic textile fabric is formed by using an entangled combination of a fibrillated slit film yarn and a multi-filament yarn as at least one of the warp and fill members. The fabric is characterized by the look and feel of a jute fabric and may be employed as a woven cloth to manufacture bags, bale wrap, wall covering, drapes and the like or, preferably, to produce secondary backing fabric for tufted carpets which exhibits enhanced adhesion characteristics as compared to prior art synthetic secondary backing materials.
Abstract:
An adhesive sheet material comprising a dimensionally stabilized and water-resistant fibrous carrier, the back of which carries a continuous impermeable film adhering intimately to the carrier yet preserving its suppleness and conferring on it resistance to stretching and preventing it from fraying, a layer of dry adhesive on this film which is compatible therewith and adherent thereto to protect its suppleness against aging, insensitive to moisture, heat and cold, and adapted to be activated by a liquid medium prior to use.
