Lightweight fabrics with a balance of high thermal properties, especially arc resistance and flash fire resistance, on the one hand, and durability and comfort properties, on the other hand, are disclosed. Articles, such as garments and linen, made from the lightweight fabrics are also disclosed. Spun yarns made with an intimate blend of fibers including flame resistant fiber, fire-resistant hydrophilic fibers, and a low level of anti-static fibers are described. The lightweight fabrics are particularly useful in garments for utility workers, industrial workers, military personnel, and firefighters.

A flexible bulk material container has a container body having at least one opening for filling and emptying the bulk material container. Carrying loops are attached to the container body. The container body and the carrying loops are made from an electrically non-conductive base fabric. A first conductive element for conducting an electrostatic charge of the bulk material container is provided which electrostatic charge occurs primarily during filling or emptying of the bulk material container. At least one the carrying loops has a discharge device. The first conductive element is connected to the discharge device and is a coating of the container body. At least one of the coating and the discharge device is made from a thermoplastic synthetic material containing a conductivity-increasing additive and having a surface resistance of between 108 Ohm and 1011 Ohm.

A flexible intermediate bulk container having optimum discharge of hazardous charge. Conventional flexible containers are capable of carrying materials that may ignite if contacted with a charge. The container of the instant invention permits the safe handling of flexible intermediate bulk containers, either with or without grounding. Unlike many prior art systems, the container, in one embodiment, does not include an anti-static coating, thereby resulting in cost and time savings. The electrostatic yarn of the present invention may be incorporated into any bag or container system without any modifications in the process of forming the yarn. The yarn may be used in either flat or circular weave, and the yarn may be included in fabrics used in other materials besides containers or bags.

Electrostatic dissipating fabrics incorporating spun yarns which include conductive staple fiber constituents incorporated within the spun yarns, and a grid of electrically conductive filament yarns. The fabrics may be of either a woven or knit construction. The conductive fiber constituents are dispersed at an effective concentration to establish a network of charge carrying junctions within and between the individual yarns and between the conductive filament yarns. The large number of junctions between the yarns facilitates the dissipation of static electricity between regions of a garment formed by the yarns. In particular, the fabric retains a high degree of conductivity across seams within the garment even after multiple washings.

An antistatic composite yarn is obtained by wrapping a core yarn with a covering yarn. The core yarn has an electrically conductive coating thereon which comprises a polymeric matrix and a finely divided electrically conductive material therein. The antistatic composite yarn and a pile yarn are used to produce a tufted antistatic carpet.Polyamide fiber is preferably used as the covering yarn and the pile yarn. The covering yarn contains at least 40% by weight of polyamide fiber, whose content of amino end group is at least 1.0.times.10.sup.-5 mol/g higher than that of polyamide fiber contained in the pile yarn.In the case the pile yarn is composed of at least two kinds of polyamide fibers which differ from one another in the content of amino end group, one of the polyamide fibers has the content of amino end group at least 1.0.times.10.sup.-5 mol/g lower than that of another.
