Abstract: An apparatus includes an interface and a control circuit. The interface may be configured to process transfers to/from a medium. The control circuit may be configured to generate a trapping set list of trapping sets of a low-density parity check code, classify bit positions of the trapping sets as belonging to either a user bits field or a parity bits field of a codeword, encode data using the low-density parity check code to generate the codeword, and present the codeword to the interface to transfer the codeword to the medium. The generation of the codeword may include at least one of a shortening or a puncturing of bit locations in the codeword in response to the classifying of the bit positions of the trapping sets. All of the data may be held in the bit locations of the codeword other than the bit locations that are shortened or punctured.

Abstract: A data storage device includes a first system-on-a-chip (SOC) associated with a first read transducer that accesses one or more magnetic disks of the data storage drive. The first SOC has a first read channel operable to receive data from the first read transducer. A second SOC is associated with a second read transducer that accesses the one or more magnetic disks of the data storage drive independently of the first read transducer. The second SOC has a second read channel operable to receive second data from the second read transducer. The first and second SOCs are coupled via a data bus that facilitates communicating the first and second data to a host via a first host interface.

Abstract: A slider configured for heat-assisted magnetic recording comprises a magnetic writer, a near-field transducer, and an optical waveguide coupling the near-field transducer to a light source. The writer is situated proximate the near-field transducer at an air bearing surface of the slider and comprises a first return pole, a second return pole, and a write pole situated between and spaced apart from the first return pole and the second return pole. A structural element is situated at or near the air bearing surface between the write pole and one of the first and second return poles. The structural element comprises a cavity. A thermal sensor is disposed in the cavity. The thermal sensor is configured for sensing contact between the slider and a magnetic recording medium, asperities of the medium, and output optical power of the light source.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a first waveguide core extending along a light-propagation direction and configured to receive light from a light source at a combined transverse electric (TE) mode and a transverse magnetic (TM) mode. A second waveguide core is spaced apart from the first waveguide core and is configured to couple light at a TM mode to the second waveguide core. A near-field transducer (NFT) is disposed at a media-facing surface of a write head, the NFT receiving the light from the first waveguide core or the second waveguide core and heating a magnetic recording medium in response thereto.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for managing data in a multi-device storage system, such as a RAID (redundant array of independent discs) system. Distributed data sets are stored across a plurality of storage devices. A selected storage device is replaced with a new storage device responsive to an anomalous event. A rebuild operation is performed to reconstruct data from the selected storage device to the new storage device. The rebuild process includes accessing a list of distributed data sets in a local memory. For each distributed data set in the list identified as constituting valid data, read commands are issued to the remaining storage devices and a write command is issued to the new storage device. For each distributed data set in the list identified as constituting unused data, a data clear command is issued to each of the remaining storage devices and to the new storage device.

Abstract: In certain embodiments, a method may include receiving one or more equalized samples of an input signal. The method may further include mitigating one or more excursions in the one or more equalized samples based on one or more current decisions of an iterative decoding process to generate compensated equalized samples. In addition, the method may include performing iterative decoding operations based on the compensated equalized samples, updating the current decisions of the iterative decoding process and outputting the current decisions as a converged result when the iterative decoding operations have converged for the compensated equalized samples.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for head delay calibration and tracking multi-sensor magnetic recording (MSMR) systems. In certain embodiments, an apparatus may comprise a first reader and a second reader configured to simultaneously read from a single track of a data storage medium, the first reader offset from the second reader so that the first reader and the second reader detect a same signal pattern offset in time. The apparatus may further comprise a circuit configured to determine a relative offset between the first reader and the second reader, including setting a fixed delay for a first signal from the first reader, setting a second delay for a second signal from the second reader, and adjusting the second delay to align the second signal to the first signal using a timing loop, with the first signal used as a reference signal.
