Abstract:
Apparatus and methods are disclosed for viewing low-birefringence structures within samples directly, with the eye, in real-time. The sample is placed between an entrance polarizer and analyzer polarizer, the transmission state of one of which is changed dynamically to create a modulated view of the scene; against this background, birefringent structures are visible because of their different appearance when modulated. Modulation rates of 4 or more states per second; use of 4 or more states, or even a continuum of states, which lie substantially on a latitude line on the Poincare sphere; and orientation of the polarization components to produce a uniform background; produce a clear view that does not produce operator fatigue. Broad-band wavelength operation spanning 50 nm or more, or the whole visible range, is achieved, and it is compatible with integration into other microscopy modes such as Hoffman relief contrast.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for personalizing data card are disclosed. One embodiment includes a card receiver configured to receive one or more data cards, a control system connected to the card receiver, the control system configured to receive personalization information, an encoder system connected to the control system, the encoder system configured to encode the one or more data cards with at least some portion of the personalization information, a card reader connected to the control system, the card reader configured to read magnetic fingerprint information from the one or more data cards, and the control system configured to store the magnetic fingerprint information.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided for facilitating management of health care in medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics, emergency rooms, etc., for example by monitoring and assessing the quality of patient care. Data is collected and operated on relating to medical conditions, treatment, cost, care, events, outcomes and results of treatments, and data representing the collective experience of similar patients is mined to discover opportunities to improve the quality of health care. Statistical and comparative data and reports including such and other information indicate a quality of care and provide epidemiologically cogent information. Quality of care may be considered as achieving desired or expected norms of performance, including success, in a timely fashion, and can be judged not just by what functionally happens during a patient instigated encounter, but also by long term outcomes evidenced by the patient's passage through the health care delivery system.

Abstract:
Dielectric welding apparatus has opposed electrodes that can be engaged on either side of a product to be welded and a dielectric welding power supply that supplies welding potentials to the electrodes. The apparatus includes electrically insulating buffer material adjacent to at least one of the electrodes. A recess formed in a surface of the buffer material receives an end of an electrically-conductive member in the product. The buffer material prevents arcing between the electrodes and the electrically-conductive member.
Abstract:
A flexible heat exchanger is suitable for heating or cooling living subjects. The heat exchanger has a a volume having at least one inlet for receiving a heat exchange fluid and at least one outlet. A flexible heat exchange plate that isessentially impermeable to the heat exchange fluid is penetrated by substantially rigid thermally conductive members. The members provide paths of high thermal conductivity through the plate. The heat exchange fluid may be water.
Abstract:
In order to provide a vibration testing apparatus which can have a large diameter without introducing undesirable rigid vibration modes, the vibration testing apparatus 1 comprises a support 2, at least one electromagnetic vibration generator 12 mounted on the support, the mounting comprising an annular body 5 and a head expander 10, the annular body being supported by bearings located around the periphery of the annular body 5.
Abstract:
An actuator for applying force along an axis to a body, comprising an annular body arranged along the axis, an annular magnetic field source within and substantially coaxially with the annular body, a substantially cylindrical central member arranged substantially coaxially within the annular body in a fixed relationship with a gap formed between the central member and the annular body and an armature comprising a substantially cylindrical hollow member extending at least partially into the gap between the central member and the annular body. The hollow member has first and second spaced coils positioned at either side of the magnetic field source when the armature is at rest, such that the areas of the gap in which the first and second coils are positioned are magnetic flux gaps, and the armature and the annular body are translationally relatively moveable when the first and second coils are energised with opposite currents.
Abstract:
An injection test signal generator is incorporated into a circuit breaker. In this way, injection testing can be performed by causing the internal test signal generator to generate test signals and feed those signals to the trip circuitry of the circuit breaker. No independent injection test signal generator need be purchased or stored, or transported to the location of the circuit breaker and hardwired thereto. Various methods of communicating with the internal test signal generator can be implemented, including, for example, a standard interface, a wireless interface or a network interface. Dences can also be provided to selectively isolate the internal test signal generator from the trip circuitry to prevent accidental and erroneous breaker trips.
Abstract:
A circuit monitoring system for performing synchronized waveform capture. A waveform capture trigger communication network interconnects a plurality of monitoring devices. The system provides direct device to device trigger communication between monitoring devices in a synchronized group. Power system waveform data is stored in the monitoring device memory of all members of the synchronized group in response to a trigger event initiated by any monitoring device in the synchronized group. High speed trigger communication results in substantially simultaneous waveform capture among the members of the synchronized group.
