Abstract:
The gist of the invention is a subtitling format encompassing elements of enhanced syntax and semantic to provide improved animation capabilities. The disclosed elements improve subtitle performance without stressing the available subtitle bitrate. This will become essential for authoring content of high-end HDTV subtitles in pre-recorded format, which can be broadcast or stored on high capacity optical media, e.g. the Blue-ray Disc. The invention includes abilities for improved authoring possibilities for the content production to animate subtitles. For subtitles that are separate from AV material, the method includes using one or more superimposed subtitle layers, and displaying only a selected part of the transferred subtitles at a time. Further, colors of a selected part of the displayed subtitles may be modified, e.g. highlighted.
Abstract:
A DVD transport stream including a video and a sub-picture stream shall be transcoded to a broadcasting transport stream. For this a decoding-encoding-chain merging video and sub-picture into a single video bitstream to conserve the information of the sub-pictures although not in the broadcasting format reserved is provided. By performing a sub-picture macroblock analysis the transcoding can be controlled such that the motion estimation unit of a standard MPEG-2 encoder and/or the entire decoding loop within the encoder can be saved.
Abstract:
Metadata transmitted in parallel to the broadcast information shall be made accessible independent of Internet availability. Therefore, it is proposed to download and store the data located on an Internet address pointed at by metadata link information. The storage is performed in parallel to the recording and is typically done onto the same media; i.e. DVR, hard disk, etc. By playing back the recorded data it is possible to access the complete data including all Internet pages pointed at.
Abstract:
TVs and other consumer electronics devices like VCRs and DVD players use on-screen display of messages. For display together with MPEG encoded video signals the picture content of an OSD text or graphic is stored in a non-volatile memory in a specific format: the OSD text or graphic content is divided into macroblock units and the OSD macroblock data are stored in MPEG encoded form in the memory. The OSD macroblocks to be displayed are then handled as a slice.
Abstract:
The typical operation of AV processing ICs includes an initialisation mode wherein registers are set up according to the desired functionality using dedicated set up software, and a normal decoding mode in which the content of the registers will not be changed any more. Often the initialisation mode software leads to un-initialised pointers and addresses for the registers. The writing of data in case of invalid pointers or address values can be avoided by additional small hardware for the register write access logic which enables or disables a write enable signal for distinct periods of time.
Abstract:
A method for the production of picture sequences for a fast search operation in a film play-back device (10, 40) is proposed. In this case, the video data of the individual pictures of the film are stored in digitally coded form in a storage unit (11, 41). The method is distinguished by the fact that 1. the video data of the pictures are read out from the storage unit (11, 41) at an increased speed, that 2. the read-out video data are decoded at an increased speed in a decoder (18, 43), that 3. only the video data of specific individual pictures are selected from the decoded video data and are fed to an encoder (21, 45) which operates at a regular speed.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the transmission of digital signals comprises the steps of forming at least two data channels carrying data packets, and eventually header data. The channels have different levels of error protection and include picture data, wherein the data packets within one of the channels have the same level of error protection, and wherein a super-ordinate channel has a higher error protection than a subordinate channel. Important information of a subordinate channel is then transmitted in a super-ordinate channel. The important information allows following erroneous reception of the digital signals an improved recovery of picture data decoding.

Abstract:
Several data streams contain video, audio and/or other data. Some of the data streams are pre-recorded in a multiplex on a storage medium while other data streams are located out of the data stream multiplex on the storage medium. The data streams are synchronized using a navigation file (List_of_PlayItems), which comprises descriptors (PlayItems, SubPlayItems) pointing to parts of said data streams, wherein said descriptors define the arrangement in time for said data streams by means of data sub stream paths.
