Abstract:
Novel process for peeling fruits and vegetables which yields maximum skin removal coupled with minimum loss of flesh. The fruit or vegetable is contacted with an aqueous dispersion of a 3-18 carbon carboxylic acid at elevated temperatures for a time sufficient to loosen the peel, which can then be removed by mechanical action.
Abstract:
In a method of vapor etching, a sample that includes a first layer atop of and in contact with a second layer which is atop of and in contact with a third layer, wherein at least the first and second layers are comprised of different materials. The sample is etched by a vapor etchant under first process conditions that cause at least a part of the first layer to be fully removed while leaving the third layer and the second layer underlying the removed part of the first layer substantially unetched. The sample is then etched by the same or a different vapor etchant under second process conditions that cause at least the part of the second layer exposed by the removal of the at least part of the first layer to be fully removed while leaving the third layer underlying the removed part of the second layer substantially unetched.

Apparatus for providing privacy for seated airplane passengers also serves to provide support for passengers walking about the airplane cabin. In a first embodiment, the apparatus is positioned behind and adjacent to the seat. The apparatus includes a side wall that is aligned with the side of the seat along the cabin aisle, and a pedestal that is perpendicular to the aisle and which is mounted to the cabin floor. In a second embodiment, the apparatus includes a rear wall that is mounted to the pedestal in a manner perpendicular to the side wall and that is integrally connected to the side wall.
Abstract:
A multi-tapped surface mount inductor (300) providing high quality factor (Q) and high inductance is capable of being surface mounted on any of its four sides. An inner substrate layer(s) (322) is provided with metallized patterns (328, 332) and vias (336) to form a multi-turn coil. The inner substrate layer (322) is then sandwiched between first and second outer substrate layers (324, 326) to form a six sided structure. Tapped element(s) (304) can be tapped off the multi-turn coil in increments of a quarter turn or less to provide a multi-tapped surface mount inductor capable of being mounted an any of its' four side surfaces (310, 312, 314, 316). When tapped element(s) (204) are tapped symmetrically between the input/output ends (214, 216), the surface mount inductor (200) may interchange its' input/output ends (214, 216) making the component surface mountable in eight different positions.
Abstract:
An aqueous dispersion containing from 5 to 80% by weight of a copolymer A) having a glass transition temperature of from 50 to 150.degree. C. and from 95 to 20% by weight of a copolymer B) having a glass transition temperature of from -50.degree. to +50.degree. C., the glass transition temperatures of the two copolymers differing by at least 20.degree. C. at least one of the two copolymers containing from 3 to 70% by weight, based on the particular copolymer, of an ethylenically unsaturated C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 -mono- or dicarboxylic acid or of the anhydride thereof and the stated weights of the copolymers A) and B) being based on the sum of A) and B), is used as a sealable coating.
Abstract:
A collapsible container has a top frame and bottom frame with folding walls having predetermined fold lines therein. The container has a closed position which is a flat platform configuration. In this configuration the walls are folded within the platform which may be used as a pallet for piece goods. The container has an open position where the top frame is raised and the container can be integral with a wheeled vehicle and used as a bulk carrier. Thus the container can be used for one shipment as a pallet for piece goods and for a next shipment as a bulk carrier.
Abstract:
A continuously variable transmission including a driving shaft connected to an engine output member and a driven shaft. The shafts are interconnected by a stepless variable coupling. A bidirectional gear drive mechanism connects the driven shaft to a differential mechanism having two output shafts extending therefrom. The drive mechanism includes a two gear forward and a three gear reverse drive path, each of which is controlled by a fluid-actuated starting clutch mechanism. Each gear path is adapted to drive a transfer gear which continually intermeshes with a ring gear of the differential defining another gear mesh. By such construction, the output shafts and the engine output memeber may rotate in the same direction during a forward drive mode of operation.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a receiver (1) in the probe head of a multiple-coordinate measuring machine in which probe-pin combinations (21) can be replaceably chucked with high precision with respect to their position in space. The receiver contains an isostatic three-point support (14) against which the base (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) of the probe-pin combination is drawn by an electrically operated clamping device. The clamping device is coupled with the control computer of the measuring machine so that a probe change can be effected automatically. In a preferred embodiment, the clamping device consists of a permanent magnet (11) and of an electromagnet (10) by which the field of the permanent magnet (11) can be selectively counteracted or increased to achieve pick-up and release functions. In another embodiment, a motor-driven screw thread performs the pick-up and release functions, and assures that the picked-up probe will unambiguously be drawn into correct isostatic engagement with the three-point support.

Abstract:
A fluid control system for a continuously variable transmission utilizing a first valve which is manually operable, and a second valve operable by a fluid motor which fluid motor also provides engagement and disengagement of two gear ratios. The first valve directs fluid flow from a fluid source to the fluid motor and to the second valve for communication to a fluid actuated starting clutch. Fluid for the clutch and fluid motor are only provided when the first valve is selectively engaged to the first or second operable gear ratios thereby directing fluid from the fluid source to the fluid actuated motor. The fluid motor is operable to move a gear engaging means and simultaneously move the second valve to an aligned port position permitting fluid flow to the starting clutch. The clutch is only engaged when the manually operated valve is in the first or second gear ratio position, therefore, independent park and neutral positions have been obviated by the fact that such a starting clutch is no longer providing power to an output means. In an alternative embodiment a pressure modulator valve is interposed between the fluid source and the first valve to control the line pressure to the fluid control system. The use of the starting clutch in this fashion obviates the use of a forward clutch to provide driving communication between input and output means.
