Abstract:
A keratin hydrogel which can be used as a wound dressing and cell scaffolding. The keratin hydrogel is formed from clean, washed hair by partially oxidizing a significant percentage of disulfide linkages to form cysteic acid groups, while some disulfide linkages remain intact. The partially oxidized hair is treated with a reducing agent, thereby reducing most of the remaining disulfide linkages to cysteine-thioglycollate disulfide and cysteine groups. A soluble fraction of hair is collected and oxidized, such that the reduced sulfur groups are allowed to reform disulfide linkages, thereby binding the keratin together. The cysteic acid groups remain, providing hydrophilic sites within the hydrogel. A higher degree of partial oxidation results in a greater abundance of hydrophilic cysteic acid groups in the hydrogel.
Abstract:
An electrical connector for a medical instrument has a plug containing a plurality of pins in electrical communication with wires emanating from a shielded cable that is connected to a medical sensor detecting physiological data. The plug portion of the electrical connector substantially surrounds the connection of the pins with the cable in a plastic housing. When the plug is inserted in to a socket portion of the connector mounted to a medical instrument housing, the pins electrically communicate with a plurality of tubular sockets to communicate the signals to electronic devices in a medical instrument. Surface coatings on the connector are provided to shield the wire connections with the pins and tubular sockets from electromagnetic interference (EMI). A tubular shield is also provided in the medical instrument to shield the electrical connection between the internal cable and the tubular receptacles from EMI. The EMI shields on the connector and the EMI shielding on the connecting cables are all connected to a common ground. A significant reduction in EMI distortion of the sensor signals is achieved.

A regenerative liquid propellant gun and pertains includes a modified contional fixed bolt extending into a conventional combustion chamber of the regenerative liquid propellant gun. The modified fixed bolt of this invention provides for improved operation of the otherwise conventional regenerative liquid propellant gun and has modified end portion embodiments and internal propellant injection passages, all for the purpose of creating turbulent propellant flow.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an automated rigid-disk finishing system with "fly-by-wire" control of each of the relevant parameters involved in the texturing process. The system includes an abrasive tape, a means for forcibly pressing the tape against the substrate to cut microscopic grooves into the substrate's surface, and a control means for simultaneously controlling the speed and tension of the tape and for sensing the tension developed in the tape on both sides of the tape/substrate interface. The described system is thus capable of establishing tape speed and tape tension simultaneously, while providing a measure of the actual work being accomplished on the rigid disk surface.

Abstract:
A combustion control system includes a sensor assembly and a process controller, the sensor assembly including sensors for providing output signals indicative of process variables, the process controller responding to the output signals to maintain a desired operation of the process. The process controller continuously monitors parameters of the sensors and provides alarms whenever any of these parameters deviate from setpoint values, the process controller automatically prioritizing these alarms to provide a display of only the most relevant alarms. A housing enclosing the process controller provides EMI/RFI shielding of the process controller including the attenuation and absorption of the EMI/RFI energy.
Abstract:
Silicone semi-interpenetrating polymer networks are formed in thermoplastic polymer matrices by the vulcanization of a hydride group-containing silicon with a polymer containing unsaturated groups. The semi-IPN is then cross-linked by hydrolysis of SiOR groups on the polymer network, so that the OR groups are hydrolyzed to allow condensation of silanol groups to form SiOSi cross-links between the chains of the polymer network. Preferably, the polymer containing unsaturated groups in an alkoxysilyl-modified poly 1,2-butadiene. The resulting cross-linked products have improved chemical resistance, increased compressive or tensile strength and excellent temperature resistance and electrical properties for use in applications such as paper-making felts and wire and cable insulation.
Abstract:
An apparatus for texturing the front and back surfaces of a rigid-disk substrate used in magnetic recording systems is disclosed. The apparatus comprises first and second mechanical assemblies; each of the assemblies including an abrasive tape, a load-bearing roller member, and a means for moving said tape over said roller member. Each assembly further includes a means for applying various components of force to the roller members to abrasively press the tape against the substrate surface. The invented apparatus also includes a network for mechanically coupling each of the assemblies together such that the applied force components are identical for both the front and back surfaces of the substrate. The applied forces are made independent of the substrate's position or displacement.
Abstract:
An apparatus for measuring differential impedances which incorporates a CMOS timer in place of the sine wave generator in a typical AC bridge configuration. A toroidal signal transformer having its primary and secondary windings tightly twisted together and wound around the core lessens temperature drift characteristics. The differential bipolar current signal provided by the secondary winding is passed through an AC to DC converter which is switched by a field effect transistor, thereby eliminating the need for prior art inverter comparator circuits. Finally, by use of a bandpass filter after the signal transformer and by insertion of a capacitor before the AC to DC converter, the need for the active filter stage used in the prior art is eliminated.
