A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a positive electrode that contains a lithium composite oxide as an active material. The cut-off voltage of charge is set to 4.25 to 4.5 V. In a region where the positive electrode and the negative electrode face each other, the Wp/Wn ratio R is in the range from 1.3 to 19 where Wp is the weight of the active material contained in the positive electrode per unit area and Wn is the weight of the active material contained in the negative electrode per unit area. This battery is excellent in safety, cycle characteristics, and storage characteristics even when the cut-off voltage of charge in a normal operating condition is set to 4.25 V or more.

Using a graphite material capable of intercalating and de-intercalating lithium ions as the anode, the peak intensity ratio R(=I(110)/I(004)) corresponding to lattice planes (110) and (004) of graphite material obtained by wide angle X-ray diffraction measurement of this anode is in a range of 0.05 to 0.5. Hence, edges of graphite crystals exist adequately on the electrode surface at the interface to the electrolyte, and therefore intercalation of lithium proceeds smoothly, polarization at the time of charging and discharging is suppressed, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery excellent in high rate discharging characteristic is obtained. The obtained battery is small in deterioration if charging and discharging are repeated.

Lithium composite metal oxides prepared by mixing at least one type of hydroxides, oxides, and carbonates of a metal selected from the group of transition metal, IIA metal, and IIIA metal, and a lithium compound of which the D50 value is in the range 5 to 50 &mgr;m, the D90 value is 90 &mgr;m or smaller, and in which particles 100 &mgr;m or greater do not exist, and calcining in the temperature range 700 to 1000° C. for 2 to 30 hours, and grinding, are used as the active material of a positive electrode which is laminated with a negative electrode with a separator interposed and spirally wound thereby forming an electrode group. By using the positive active materials prepared in this manner, discharge capacity and cycle characteristic of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell can be improved.
