Abstract:
A method for producing quinone methides by the electrocatalytic oxidation of bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methanes using 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as the oxidant. Spent oxidant, in the form of DDQH.sub.2, may be recycled and electrochemically regenerated to active DDQ oxidant.
Abstract:
Unsaturated alcohols, thiols and thioesters are cyclized by a phenyl selenenyl halide; wherein the conformation flexibility of the unsaturated alcohol, thiol or thioester is selected such that the hydroxy group, thiol group or thioester group is capable of internal addition to at least one unsaturated bond in said alcohol, thiol or thioester; and wherein the ratio of the phenyl selenenyl halide to said unsaturated alcohol, thiol or thioester is 0.9-1.5 to 1. In a preferred embodiment, oxygen isomers and sulfur analogs of prostacyclin of the formula ##STR1## wherein X= ##STR2## Y=(E)- and (Z)- >C.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 COOR; (E)- >CH--CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 COOR; andR=any pharmaceutically acceptable cation or lower alkyl group comprising 1 to 4 carbon atoms are formed by:(1) cyclizing a PGF.sub.2.alpha. prostaglandin derivative or a 9.alpha. thio or 9.alpha. -thioester analog of prostaglandin PGF.sub.2.alpha. by reacting said prostaglandin derivative or analog with a phenyl selenenyl halide, wherein the molar ratio of said phenyl selenenyl halide to said prostaglandin derivative or analog is 0.9-1.5:1; and(2) oxidizing the product obtained therefrom.
Abstract:
Effect separation of a composition of matter that includes at least two seed or plant oil derivatives into at least one desired product stream using at least two separation operations, which are independently selected from among several potential separation operations, in conjunction with at least one recycle stream from a separation operation.
Abstract:
Extruded polymer foams are prepared using brominated fatty acids, an ester, amide or ester-amide of a brominated fatty acid, a glyceride of one or more brominated fatty acids, or a polymerized brominated fatty acid as an FR additive. The brominated FR additives unexpectedly are stable at the extrusion temperatures, and provide excellent flame retardancy to the foams.
Abstract:
Copolyesters containing secondary hydroxyl groups are useful polyols for manufacturing polyurethanes. These can be prepared by reacting a secondary hydroxyl-containing fatty acid or ester thereof with an initiator containing hydroxyl and/or primary or secondary amino groups. A copolyester of particular interest includes a poly(ethylene oxide) segment derived from a poly(ethylene oxide) initiator.

An aldehyde composition containing a mixture of mono-formyl-, diformyl-, and triformyl-substituted fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters having a di-aldehyde/tri-aldehyde weight ratio of less than 5/1 and an average functionality number from greater than 0.96 to less than 1.26. A monomer alcohol composition containing a mixture of mono-hydroxymethyl-, dihydroxymethyl-, and trihydroxymethyl-substituted fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters having a diol/triol weight ratio of less than 5/1 and an average functionality number from greater than 0.90 to less than 1.20. The monomer alcohol can be converted into an oligomeric polyol for use in the manufacture of polyurethane flexible foams.

Abstract:
The present invention provides thermoplastic hydroxy-functional polyesters. The polyesters have at least 10 sequential units, wherein the sequential units consist of units selected from units represented by the following formula (1) and units represented by the following formula (2); Wherein each of R1 independently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; each of R2 independently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; each of R3 independently represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; Each of R4 independently represents a substituted or unsubstituted homoalkyl or heteroalkyl group; and said moiety having no fewer than 1 unit represented by formula (1) and no fewer than 1 unit represented by formula (2). The present invention further provides processes for making hydroxyfunctional polyesters, such as polymerizing epoxidized fatty acids in the presence of an onium salt, and compositions and articles that include or are derived from the hydroxyfuntional polyesters
