Abstract: Display assemblies for supporting displays on stands or support arms have mount portions to removably attach to the displays using magnetic assemblies and latches. The magnetic assemblies and latches can improve user experience and allow the display to be installed on a support arm from the viewing side of the display and without having to see or reach behind the display. Magnetic structures can center a mount portion of the support arm and a recess of the display and can attract them to each other. Laterally-extending latches can ensure the display is not inadvertently removed. Locking mechanisms can prevent the display from being rotated to a portrait orientation when sufficient space around the display and the necessary user intent is not provided.

Abstract: An input device includes a touch plate having a central axis and a top surface with three outer points evenly spaced away from the central axis. A touch sensor is used to detect a user touch on the top surface at the first outer point, and a support mechanism supports the touch plate and is configured to translate the touch plate at the second and third outer points upon application of the user touch and translation of the touch plate at the first outer point. Translation of the three outer points is substantially equal along the central axis.

Abstract: Accessory devices for portable electronic devices are described. An exemplary accessory device can include a first segment coupled to a second segment via a first hinge assembly. The accessory can include a third segment coupled to the second segment via a second hinge assembly such that the second segment is positioned between the first and third segments. The accessory device can be arranged between a closed configuration and a configuration of a stand that supports the portable electronic device at a viewing angle. At the support configuration, the second segment can be at an acute angle relative to the first segment to shift the center of gravity of the system towards the middle. The third segment can be suspended above the first segment and be inclined outwards. The hinge assemblies of the system can be sufficiently stiff to withstand the weight of the electronic device.

The body includes at least an outer layer formed of lightweight flexible material and an inner layer attached to the outer layer. The inner layer is connected to the support layer forming a load path between the inner layer and the structural support layer. A load applied to the multipart computer housing is transferred by way of the load path to the support layer without substantially affecting the outer layer.

Abstract: A magnetic connector system having a durable and reliable construction and a reduced height while maintaining sufficient holding strength. A connector insert may utilize a crimping piece to crimp a braiding of a cable. The crimping piece may be fixed to an attraction plate and a board in the insert for mechanical reliability. Retention clips may be used to fix a shell to the attraction plate. A connector receptacle may employ a magnetically conductive label to improve holding strength.

Abstract: Embodiments described herein may take the form of an electromagnetic actuator that produces a haptic output during operation. Generally, an electromagnetic coil is wrapped around a central magnet array. A shaft passes through the central magnet array, such that the central array may move along the shaft when the proper force is applied. When a current passes through the electromagnetic coil, the coil generates a magnetic field. The coil is stationary with respect to a housing of the actuator, while the central magnet array may move along the shaft within the housing. Thus, excitation of the coil exerts a force on the central magnet array, which moves in response to that force. The direction of the current through the coil determines the direction of the magnetic field and thus the motion of the central magnet array.

Abstract: An electronic device such as a portable computer including a base and a lid is provided. The electronic device also includes a hinge assembly that facilitates pivoting movement between the lid and the base. The hinge assembly includes a body and a shaft configured to respective engage one of the base and the lid. The hinge assembly also includes a clutch mechanism. The clutch mechanism may include a friction member that induces friction during movement of the lid to help retain the lid in a user-selected angular position with respect to the base. Further, the clutch mechanism may include a spring that extends through a cavity defined through the shaft. The spring may be affixed to the shaft at one end and affixed to the body at a second end. Thereby, movement of the lid may be assisted or opposed by torsion in the spring, so as to improve a user experience.

Abstract: Variable friction clutch structures are described. In particular embodiments, the variable friction clutch structures are used to provide smooth and consistent movement of hinge assemblies of portable computers. The variable friction clutch can be configured to transition between a high frictional resistance mode and a low frictional resistance mode. In some embodiments, the variable friction clutches include cam systems. In some embodiments, the variable friction clutches include threaded shaft systems. In some embodiments, the variable friction clutches include mechanical linkage systems. In some embodiments, two or more variable friction clutches are included within a single hinge assembly for a portable computer. A space-saving wire clutch that can be used alone or in combination with the variable friction clutches is disclosed.
