An anti-skid control system for an automotive vehicle is provided with an actuator which is disposed in a hydraulic circuit between a pressure generator and a wheel brake cylinder. The actuator is arranged to control the hydraulic braking pressure applied to the wheel brake cylinder. In response to a wheel speed detected by a wheel speed detector, it is determined in an electronic control unit whether a condition for decreasing the braking pressure is effected. When this condition is effected, the decrease mode is provided in the control unit. When a predetermined period of time lapses after the decrease mode is initiated, the decrease mode is turned to a pressure control mode for applying the braking pressure to prevent the road wheel from being locked. When the condition is not effected during the predetermined period of time after the decrease mode is initiated, the decrease mode is turned to a direct supply mode for directly communicating the pressure generator with the wheel brake cylinder. Consequently, the lack of braking force caused by the delay of timing for decreasing the hydraulic braking pressure due to an erroneous detection of a locking condition of the road wheel on a rough road is effectively prevented.

A pulse signal is generated by a wheel speed sensor with a frequency proportional to the speed of rotation of a vehicle wheel, the pulse signal comprising a plurality of frames each having a series of a predetermined number of pulses which are tended to be affected by noise and pulse mutilation. Pulses in each frame are counted and from the count is derived an instantaneous wheel speed value. The difference between the successively derived instantaneous speed values is taken and compared with a predetermined threshold. A first or a second indication is given in response to the difference being lower or higher than the threshold, respectively. If the first indication is given, output signals representing the average wheel speed and average wheel acceleration of the wheel are derived from the instantaneous speed values of successive frames. If the second indication is given, the instantaneous speed value of the previous frame is used instead of the instantaneous value of the subsequent frame which is disturbed by noise or pulse mutilation to derive the output signals.

In an antiskid control system for a motor vehicle, the speed and acceleration of at least one vehicle wheel are detected, and from the detected wheel speed, the speed of the vehicle is estimated. First and second variable threshold values are derived from the vehicle speed. The wheel speed and acceleration are compared with the first and second thresholds, respectively, to estimate the level of road surface friction and to operate solenoid-operated hydraulic brake pressure decreasing means. The operating period of the pressure decreasing means is controlled in accordance with the estimated road surface friction to prevent excessive reduction of the brake pressure and premature locking of the wheels.

In an antiskid control system, first and second wheel speed values are derived from pulse signals supplied from wheel speed sensors to indicate respectively the rotational speeds of first and second wheels of the vehicle. A trimming value is derived from the difference between the first and second wheel speed values and used as a multiplier by which the first wheel speed value is multiplied to compensate for the deviation of the speed of the first wheel with respect to the speed of the second wheel. The compensated first wheel speed value compared with a variable threshold that is a function of the speed of the vehicle to determine the down pressure timing.

A brake fluid pressure controlling device is provided for increasing, decreasing or maintaining the brake fluid pressure in the wheel cylinders, controlling the switching valve on the basis of wheel velocity, estimated vehicle speed, and wheel rotating acceleration. A second arithmetic operation device marks the minimum and maximum values in the wheel velocity after a brake fluid pressure reduction based on the wheel velocity detected by the wheel velocity detecting device calculates the recovery acceleration in the wheel velocity in the shift from the minimum value to the maximum value and compares the recovery acceleration with the set value. A vehicle acceleration correcting device corrects the vehicle body acceleration detected by the acceleration detecting device so as to set the vehicle body acceleration at a smaller value in case the recovery acceleration is less than the set value.
