This invention relates to ion-pair-containing siloxane compounds that are extremely effective as surface tension depressants. The compounds of the present invention contain both anionic and cationic substituents and can be formed by metathesis reactions between metallic salts of anionic silicone or organic surface-active compounds and halide salts of quaternary ammonium silicone or organic surface-active compounds. The compounds of the invention are relatively pH insensitive when compared to siloxanes bearing anionic and cationic substituents that are formed by proton transfer. Thus, the organosilicon compounds of the invention will remain stable despite changes in pH of the mixture in which they are present.

A particular class of sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes are provided which consists essentially of: (1) monofunctional siloxy units (M.degree.) the respective silicon atoms of which have two alkyls bonded thereto, the third silicon-bonded organic group being alkyl or sulfolanyloxyalky; (2) an average of from about 0.5 to about 10 moles of difunctional dialkylsiloxy units for every two moles of M.degree.; from zero up to an average of about 10 moles, for every two moles of M.degree., of difunctional monoalkylsiloxy units in which the second organic group bonded to silicon is sulfolanyloxyalkyl, provided an average of at least about 0.5 and no more than about 10 moles of sulfolanyloxyalkyl groups are present in the sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes for every two moles of M.degree.. The sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes are generally useful as surfactant providing compositions and find particular application as foam-stabilizing components of high resilience polyurethane foam formulations in which the organic polyol reactant comprises a polyether polyol reactant having an average primary hydroxyl content of at least about 35 mole percent based on the total moles of hydroxyl groups contained in said polyether polyol. The siloxanes of the invention are also useful as surfactant components of high resilience foam formulations in which the polyol reactant additionally comprises a polymer/polyether polyol.

The polymers of the invention find particular application in the manufacture of cellular urethane products including flame-retarded urethane foam.
