The subject invention relates to a process for preparing a compatibilized blend of a first polymer which is a rubber containing free nitrile groups, hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups, amide groups, amine groups or mercapto groups and a second dissimilar polymer which is a thermoplastic polymer containing nitrile groups, hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups, amide groups, amine groups or mercapto groups, which comprises reacting a rubber having pendant blocked isocyanate groups bound thereto with the first polymer and the second dissimilar polymer, wherein the compatibilized blend contains from about 55 weight percent to about 75 weight percent of the rubber containing nitrile groups, hydroxyl groups, amide groups, amine groups or mercapto groups.

By utilizing the process of this invention, the adhesion between polymeric reinforcements and rubber compositions can be greatly improved. This invention more specifically discloses a process for preparing a rubber article containing a polymeric reinforcement which comprises: (1) plasma treating the polymeric reinforcement in a manner whereby reactive groups containing Zerewitinoff active hydrogen atoms are bonded to the surface thereof; (2) incorporating the polymeric reinforcement having Zerewitinoff active hydrogen atoms bonded to the surface thereof into an uncured rubber composition, wherein said rubber composition has pendant blocked isocyanate groups bound thereto; and (3) curing the uncured rubber into the desired shape for the rubber article at an elevated temperature sufficient to deblock the isocyanate groups bonded to the uncured rubber allowing for the isocyanate groups to react with the Zerewitinoff active hydrogen atoms bonded to the surface of the polymeric reinforcement.

The present invention relates to an antidegradant system comprised of (A) an antidegradant selected from the group consisting of phenolic antidegradants, amine antidegradants and mixtures thereof; and (B) a unique polymerizable synergist. In addition, there is disclosed a stabilized polymer comprising (A) a polymer selected from the group consisting of (1) homopolymers and copolymers of monoolefins; (2) natural rubber; and (3) synthetic rubber derived from a diene monomer; (B) from about 0.05 to about 10 parts by weight based upon 100 parts of polymer of an antidegradant selected from the group consisting of phenolic antidegradants, amine antidegradants and mixtures thereof; and (C) from about 0.05 to about 20 parts by weight based upon 100 parts of polymer of a unique polymerizable aromatic sulfide synergist.

It is sometimes desirable to cure rubber compositions utilizing non-sulfur curing agents. The subject invention reveals rubber compositions which can be cured without utilizing sulfur or sulfur containing compounds. The subject invention more specifically discloses a rubber composition which can be crosslinked by heating which is comprised of (1) at least one rubber having pendant blocked isocyanate groups bound thereto; and (2) at least one compound which contains at least 2 Zerewitinoff active hydrogens.This invention also discloses crosslinking of elastomer compounds containing (1) at least one rubber having functionalized groups containing at least one Zerewitinoff active hydrogen and (2) at least one compound which contains at least two blocked isocyanate groups. This invention also discloses self-curing elastomers containing both blocked isocyanate groups and groups containing at least one active Zerewitinoff hydrogen.
