Abstract: A surgical instrument with a stowing knife blade includes an elongated shaft, an end effector coupled to the shaft and including two opposed jaws, a housing included in one of the jaws, a first member mounted in the housing and movable distally, a knife pivotally coupled with the first member, and a second member. The knife is configured to cut when advanced distally. The first and second members are moved distally at the same rate during a cutting motion of the knife and the second member blocks a rotation of the knife relative to the first member during the cutting motion of the knife. After moving through the first distance, relative movement between the first and second members occurs so as to permit or induce the previously blocked rotation of the knife so that the knife can be stowed.

Abstract: A method of compensating for slack developing in an actuation element of a surgical instrument includes in response to slack developing in the actuation element, diverting the actuation element to follow a diverted path via a force exerted by an elastically deformable structure coupled to the actuation element. The diverted path differs from a path followed by the actuation element in a tensioned state, and the elastically deformable structure is moveable in translation together with the actuation element.

Abstract: Method of actuating an end effector of a surgical device employ a drive shaft to actuate the end effector. A method of actuating an end effector of a surgical device includes rotating a main shaft relative to the proximal chassis. An end effector base of the end effector is supported by a wrist mechanism coupled between the end effector base and the main shaft. The end effector base is reoriented relative to the main shaft by operating a wrist articulation mechanism. A drive shaft is supported for rotation within a lumen of the main shaft. A feature of the end effector is actuated by rotating an input shaft of the end effector by rotating the drive shaft relative to the main shaft.

Abstract: A system and method of variable velocity control of an instrument by a computer-assisted device includes a computer-assisted device that includes an actuator and one or more processors. To perform an operation with an instrument coupled to the computer-assisted device, the one or more processors are configured to set a velocity set point of the actuator to an initial velocity, monitor force or torque applied by the actuator to actuate the instrument, when the applied force or torque is above a first force or torque limit, determine whether a total duration of a set of pauses occurring during the operation of the instrument is below a maximum pause threshold, and in response to determining that the total duration is below the maximum pause threshold, pause the operation of the instrument.

Abstract: An electrically energized medical instrument uses one or more drive cables to both actuate mechanical components of a wrist mechanism or an effector and to electrically energize the effector. Electrical isolation can be achieved using an insulating main tube through which drive cables extend from a backend mechanism to the effector, an insulating end cover that leaves only the desired portions of the effector exposed, and one or more seals to prevent electrically conductive liquid from entering the main tube. Component count and cost may be further reduced using a pair of pulleys that are shared by four drive cables.

Abstract: A robotic surgical assembly includes a drive assembly and a shaft assembly. The drive assembly is detachably mountable to a surgical robot and includes roll, pitch, and clamp/fire inputs configured to drivingly couple with respective outputs of the surgical robot. The clamp/fire shaft is drivingly coupled with the clamp/fire input and configured to detachably couple to the reload clamp/fire shaft.
