Abstract: A surgical staple cartridge is disclosed comprising a plurality of staples removably stored within the surgical staple cartridge. The staples comprise staple legs which extend from a staple base portion. The staple legs comprise staple tips configured to pierce tissue and contact a corresponding forming pocket of an anvil of surgical stapling instrument. The staples further comprise zones having different hardnesses.

Abstract: A staple cartridge is disclosed. The staple cartridge can comprise a cartridge body comprising a deck and a bottom surface opposite the deck. The staple cartridge can comprise a plurality of staple cavities, wherein each staple cavity extends into the cartridge body from the deck to the bottom surface. Additionally, a plurality of wells can be defined into the staple cartridge from the deck to a lowermost surface of the well. A plurality of staples can be removably positioned in the staple cavities. The staple cartridge can comprise a tissue thickness compensator releasably secured to the cartridge body, wherein the tissue thickness compensator comprises a compensator body and a plurality of extensions extending from the compensator body into the wells, wherein at least one extension is compressed within one of the wells. Each well can surround at least one staple cavity and/or can extend between at least two staple cavities.

Abstract: A staple cartridge assembly comprising a staple cartridge and a compensator is disclosed. The staple cartridge comprises a cartridge deck, a retention rail defining an aperture, a staple cavity defined in the cartridge deck, and a staple removably positioned in the staple cavity. Abstract: A surgical stapling instrument (10) includes anvil and cartridge portions (100, 200) operably coupled together. The anvil and cartridge portions (100, 200) are transitionable between clamped and unclamped configurations. The surgical stapling instrument (10) also includes a clamp detection assembly (300) with a plunger (312) slidably disposed in a chamber (310) of a housing (302), a block (314) with an aperture (316) attached to the plunger (312), a spring (318) disposed in the chamber (310), and a button (340) slidably disposed in a recess (180) of the anvil portion (100). The spring (318) biases the plunger (312) and block (314) towards the cartridge portion (200) such that the aperture (316) is out of alignment with the button (340) in the unclamped configuration and engagement of the plunger (312) with a bridge (254) of the cartridge portion (200) translates the plunger (312) and the block (314) away from the opening of the chamber (310) such that the aperture (316) is aligned with the button (340) in the clamped configuration.

Abstract: A surgical stapling apparatus includes a housing assembly, an elongated shaft extending from the housing assembly, a housing electrical connector assembly, and a loading unit selectively attachable to the elongated shaft. The loading unit extends distally to an end effector supporting at least one sensor. The loading unit supports a loading unit electrical connector assembly on a proximal end portion of loading unit. The loading unit electrical connector assembly is positioned to contact the housing electrical connector assembly when the loading unit electrical connector assembly is received within the elongated shaft to electrically couple the at least one sensor to the housing assembly.

Abstract: Locking assemblies for surgical clamping and cutting instruments include a locking member and a switch. A drive member may be configured to releasably engage a knife and/or a shuttle of the surgical instrument for translating the knife and/or shuttle in a distal direction through a firing stroke. The locking member is movable from a first position permitting distal translation of the drive member through the firing stroke, and a second position inhibiting distal translation of the drive member through the firing stroke. A switch, when proximally positioned, releasably engages the locking member to maintain the locking member in the first position. The switch disengages from the locking member when the switch is moved to a distal position.
