Abstract: A method for evacuating particulates from a surgical site is disclosed. The method comprises communicatively connecting a particulate evacuation module and a surgical hub, wherein the surgical hub comprises a surgical hub enclosure, and wherein the particulate evacuation module is configured to be received within the surgical hub enclosure. The method further comprises removing a particulate from the surgical site and into the particulate evacuation module, analyzing the removed particulate, and modifying an operation of the particulate evacuation module based on the analysis of the removed particulate.

Abstract: Surgical stapling instruments having surgical stapling cartridges are disclosed. At least one embodiment includes an end effector that has an elongate channel that is configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein and an anvil that is movably supported on the elongate channel between an open position and closed positions in response to an application of opening and closing motions applied thereto. An anvil lock member cooperates with the anvil to retain the anvil in an open position when a staple cartridge has not been installed in the elongate channel and prevent the anvil from moving to a closed position until the staple cartridge has been seated within the elongate channel. Surgical staple cartridges are configured to move the anvil from an open position to an actuatable position when the cartridge has been installed in the end effector.

Abstract: A surgical device includes an end effector having a pair of opposing jaw members and a drive beam movable longitudinally through the pair of opposing jaw members thereby approximating the pair of opposing jaw members relative to each other. The device also includes an adapter assembly configured to selectively couple to the end effector. The adapter assembly includes an actuation assembly configured to mechanically engage the drive beam and to move the drive beam longitudinally. The device also includes a handle assembly configured to selectively couple to the adapter assembly. The handle assembly includes: a power source, a motor coupled to the power source, a sensor configured to measure a force imparted on the drive beam, and a motor controller configured to control the motor to maintain constant force on the drive beam based on the force measured by the sensor during longitudinal movement of the drive beam approximating the pair of opposing jaw members closer relative to each other.

Abstract: A powered handheld electromechanical surgical device includes a motor configured to drive extension and retraction of a drive component, a sensor configured to sense force exerted on the drive component during extension of the drive component, and a controller including a processor and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to receive the sensed force from the sensor, control a speed of the motor during extension of the drive component in accordance with the sensed force, determine a speed profile or a force profile during extension of the drive component, and control a speed of the motor during retraction of the drive component in accordance with the speed profile or the force profile.

Abstract: A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument is disclosed. The method can comprise inserting a staple cartridge into a surgical instrument, receiving a first signal from a first RFID tag on a first component of the staple cartridge with an RFID reader system, receiving a second signal from a second RFID tag on a second component of the staple cartridge with the RFID reader system, comparing the first signal and the second signal to stored data for a compatible staple cartridge, and locking a staple firing system of the surgical instrument if the first signal and the second signal do not match the stored data for a compatible staple cartridge.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a body, a shaft assembly, an end effector, an actuation assembly, and a bailout mechanism. The shaft assembly extends distally from the body. The end effector is disposed on a distal end of the shaft assembly and includes a first jaw and a second jaw. The actuation assembly includes a pusher member configured to move relative to the end effector to drive movement of the first jaw, the second jaw, or both the first jaw and the second jaw. The bailout mechanism includes a first elongate actuation element and a second elongate actuation element. A portion of the bailout mechanism is configured to selectively apply tension to the first elongate actuation element and the second elongate actuation element to move the pusher member. The first elongate actuation element is stronger in tension than the second elongate actuation element cable.

Abstract: A method for controlling a powered surgical stapler that includes an end effector with jaws that are movable between an open and a closed position and a firing member that is movable between a starting position and an ending position within the end effector. The jaws and firing member are controlled by separate rotary systems and the end effector includes a firing member lockout system that prevents axial movement of the firing member unless the surgical staple cartridge is in ready to fire condition.

Abstract: Techniques for control of an instrument include a device having an actuator. To perform an operation with an instrument coupled to the actuator, the instrument is operated according to a state machine by: transitioning the instrument from a gripped state to a clamped state in response to receiving a clamp command; transitioning the instrument from the clamped state to a firing state in response to receiving a fire command; transitioning the instrument from the firing state to a pause state in response to detecting a stall in the actuator used to actuate the instrument; transitioning the instrument from the pause state to a stop firing state in response to a pause limit being reached; and transitioning the instrument from the pause state to the firing state in response to the actuator beginning to move again or after a first predetermined period of time has elapsed since entering the pause state.

Abstract: A method of applying a buttress to a surgically cut and stapled site uses an end effector with a buttress applier cartridge assembly to load one or more buttress assemblies to the end effector. The buttress assemblies each include a buttress to support a staple formed therein as well an adhesive for adhering to the end effector. The adhesive of the buttress assemblies can include a pattern to assist in both attachment to the end effector and release from the end effector after cutting and stapling a tissue site. The buttress applier cartridge can include features that accommodate end effectors having various tip configurations, including straight tips and curved or bent tips.
