Abstract:
The invention is directed to improved centrifugal rotary electric furnaces which are used for the heating and or fusion of minerals, such as quartz, and other materials having a high melting point. The furnace includes a generally cylindrical furnace shell and a decreasing diameter stepped end member attached to each end of the shell which is intended to more closely conform the end of the furnace to the shape of fused ingot or melted charge formed inside the furnace, while still providing a sufficient depth of unmelted charge between the fused or melted material and the end member to insulate the end member from excessive heat and the warpage and other damage caused thereby.

Abstract:
A metal oxide-hydrogen battery including an outer pressure vessel that contains a plurality of cell modules disposed in side-by-side relations. Adjacent cell modules are separated by heat transfer members that transfer heat from the cell modules to the outer vessel. Each heat transfer member includes a generally flat body or fin which is disposed between adjacent cell modules and a peripheral flange which is located in contact with the inner surface of the pressure vessel. The width of each cell module is greater than the length of the flange so that the flange of each heat transfer member is out of contact with the adjacent heat transfer member. The flanges are constructed and arranged to exert an outward radial force against the pressure vessel. Tie bars serve to clamp the cell modules and heat transfer members together in the form of a stack which is inserted into the pressure vessel.
Abstract:
A pressure vessel construction for a rechargeable metal oxide hydrogen battery. The pressure vessel includes a generally cylindrical shell, the ends of which are enclosed by dome shaped heads. A metal fitting is mounted within an opening in at least one head and the electrical leads connected to the battery cell are sealed within an opening in the fitting. The vessel includes a flexible inner liner of material which is impervious to the passage of hydrogen gas and an outer layer of fiber reinforced resin which is capable of withstanding the internal pressure generated by the hydrogen. The inner liner can consist of a plurality of wrappings of thin plastic film, such as polyvinylidene chloride, or alternately the inner liner can consist of thin metal sections having overlapping edge portions sealed by resilient elastomeric sealing strips which permit expansion and contraction of the metal liner under varying internal pressure conditions, without causing major tensile stress in the metal.
Abstract:
A reversibly mountable clutch control handle for a walk-behind lawn mower which may be pivotally mounted on the collapsible handle of the lawn mower in either one of two alternative mounting positions, whichever best suits the convenience and comfort of the operator, and in which the mower handle, the clutch control handle, and the control linkage associated with the clutch control handle are all collapsible to a folded position for storage or shipment in either of the mounting positions of the clutch control handle. The mower handle includes two laterally spaced legs lying in a common plane and connected at their upper end by a cross bar. In one of its alternative mounting arrangements, the clutch control handle when in its unclutched position lies above and forwardly of the common plane of the laterally spaced legs of the mower handle, while in the other of its alternative mounting arrangements, the clutch control handle when in its unclutched position lies below and rearwardly of the aforementioned common plane. When the clutch control handle is "squeezed" by the operator toward the common plane of the mower handle legs, belt-driven drive rollers are moved into driving engagement with the rear drive wheels of the mower, and when the operator releases the clutch control handle, the belt-driven drive rollers are moved by the tension of the drive belt for the rollers out of driving engagement with the rear wheels of the mower.
Abstract:
An arrangement for rotating a valve of a reciprocating internal combustion engine relative to the valve seat in addition to the normal reciprocating motion of the valve, whereby to more evenly distribute wear on the valve and on the valve seat, and, in the case of an exhaust valve, to more uniformly distribute heating of the valve and thus avoid or minimize thermal distortion of the exhaust valve. The rotation of the valve is obtained by use of the well known principle in accordance with which the central longitudinal axis of the valve lifter is offset from the central plane (as measured in the lengthwise dimension of the cam shaft) of the rotating cam which imparts reciprocatory movement to the valve lifter and thus to the valve. The offset relation just described imparts a rotary movement to the valve lifter which, in turn, imparts a rotary movement to the valve during the period of cam rotation when the valve is lifted off the valve seat. In applicant's construction, two aligned bores preferably of equal diameter are provided in the cylinder block or engine body, the two bores lying on a common axis X-X with each other and with the central plane of the cam which actuates the valve lifter. The first or upper bore in the cylinder block receives a guide bushing having a valve-stem-receiving bore which is concentric and coaxial with the internal diameter of its corresponding cylinder block bore and thus lies on the axis X-X. The second or lower bore in the cylinder block receives a second guide bushing having a valve-lifter-stem-receiving bore lying on an axis Y-Y which is eccentric relative to internal diameter of its corresponding cylinder block bore. Thus the valve lifter whose stem is received by the bore of the second guide bushing lies on an axis Y-Y which is eccentric relative to the axis X-X which passes through the central plane of the cam. This eccentric relation of the axis of the valve lifter relative to the central plane of the cam causes rotation of the cam to impart a rotary motion to the valve lifter, which, in turn, imparts a rotary movement to the valve during the period when the valve is off the valve seat. Applicant's construction has the advantage that the two aligned preferably equal diameter bores in the cylinder block or engine body can be made by relatively simple and inexpensive machining operations, with the eccentric relation of the valve lifter to the cam being provided by a guide bushing having an eccentric bore therein, thereby eliminating the need for drilling an eccentric bore in the cylinder block for receiving the stem of the valve lifter.
Abstract:
A tractor and mower combination is provided with a mechanical interlock between the manual control for the clutch in the mower drive and the manual control for the forward-reverse transmission to prevent operation of the mower during reverse travel of the tractor and to prevent the transmission control from being placed in a reverse travel position when the mower is being operated.

The toothpaste extruding toothbrush is a toothbrush assembly having a slotted, hollow, inner volume within the handle covered by a diaphragm which is held in place by a snap on top having a slotted lengthwise opening centered on top that a thumb roller partially extends through which is operated by the thumb of a user to deform the diaphragm to force toothpaste from the inner volume into the extrusion passage and into the bristles.
Abstract:
An aerially deployed illumination system is provided which may be remotely operated or preprogrammed to illuminate a designated target, such as a geographic area, vehicle, or personnel. In particular, a remotely controlled UAV having an illumination system disposed thereon is provided, the illumination system comprised of a concentrated light source and light movement apparatus operable to rapidly scan the target with the light source, thereby providing an illusion of a large area of illumination. Preferably, a line is created from the light source, the line being rapidly moved over the target in specific patterns and at specific frequencies. The system may further include a plurality of UAV's capable of ad hoc networking, so as to illuminate both large areas, as well as stationary and moving targets. In addition, the UAV's having an illumination system disposed thereon may be disposed within a projectile, the projectile tube or gun launched, and the UAV ejected from the projectile over a designated target, thereby enabling quick delivery of the UAV to an area of interest.
Abstract:
A flechette cartridge is provided, containing a plurality of flechettes, capable of firing the flechettes in a concentrated and accurate spread pattern upon firing. In particular, both low and high velocity flechette cartridges are provided, which accurately disperse flechettes in a concentrated spread pattern. The flechette cartridge minimizes the parasitic launch mass to maximize flechette payload, flechette velocity and kinetic energy, and to maximize target effects. The flechette cartridge provides a robust means for reliably stripping the flechette payload cup.
