A method and apparatus for elimination of lamination defects on progressive addition lenses. The lamination method uses a flexible bladder designed to apply pressure evenly across the lens surface. A spacer is positioned between a Hard Multi-Coat carrier and the flexible bladder. The spacer is located in a region of the carrier which is designated to deliver a coating to a section of the lens which is farthest from the carrier. The spacer asymmetrically increases the pressure applied to the carrier to eliminate lamination defects.

A process for transferring a coating onto at least one optical surface of a lens blank which comprises: providing a lens blank having at least one geometrically defined surface; providing a support having an internal surface bearing a coating and an external surface; depositing on said geometrically defined surface of said lens blank or said coating a pre-measured amount of a curable glue; moving relatively to each other the lens blank and the support to either bring the coating into contact with the curable glue or bring the curable glue into contact with the geometrically defined surface of the lens blank; applying a sufficient pressure onto the external surface of the support so that the thickness of a final glue layer after curing is less than 100 micrometers; curing the glue; and withdrawing the mold part to recover the lens blank with the coating adhered onto its geometrically defined surface.

A method for producing an ophthalmic lens comprised of a base lens and a film structure bound to said base lens includes a pressure-free heating. Said heating is performed after assembling the film structure with a semi-finished lens (1), and before said semi-finished lens is machined for obtaining the base lens. Although a maximum heating temperature is higher than a glass-transition temperature of the semi-finished lens, no image distortion and optical aberration is produced for the final ophthalmic lens. The maximum heating temperature is also lower than a glass-transition temperature of the film structure.

A method for laminating a functional film on to an optical base element and a tri-layer adhesive system for use in the method. The tri-layer adhesive includes a first latex adhesive layer disposed on the functional film and a second latex adhesive layer disposed on the optical base element. An HMA layer is disposed in between the latex layers to form a tri-layer adhesive to permanently retain the functionalized film on the optical base element. The method includes first coating a latex adhesive on the functional film and second coating a latex adhesive on the optical base element. An HMA is then coated on to one of the dried latex adhesive layers. The film is hot pressed on to the optical base element with the HMA sandwiched in between the latex layers to form a laminated optical device.
