In automotive engineering transmitting and receiving stations are usually used in keyless locking systems as electronic key modules or evaluation units for identifying the key module. Deactivation of the locking system is prevented if the key module allocated by means of a clear identification number from the evaluation unit is not in the immediate vicinity of the evaluation unit. Communication between the evaluation unit and the key module is carried out by transmitting data telegrams between transmitting and receiving stations. The aim of the invention is to determine the distance between the transmitting and receiving stations in a simple manner. 2.2. According to the novel method, at least three data telegrams are alternately transmitted between the transmitting and receiving stations; when the data telegram is received, each data bit of said data telegram is associated with a counter value corresponding to the counter state of a free-running counter at the moment when the respective data bit is received; a counter sum is associated with each data telegram as a sum or average value of the counter values determined during reception of the data telegram concerned and a sum figure is formed by weighted summation of the counter sums as an indicator of the distance between the transmitting and receiving stations.

A locking device for vehicle seats, in particular motor vehicle seats, includes two mutually displaceable parts. A rail, associated to one of the parts, extends in the direction of displacement and has at least one row of snap-in holes extending longitudinally along the rail. These holes are separated from each other by web-like material sections. Ratchets, associated to the other part, can move in relation to the rail between a disengaging position and a locking position. They move perpendicularly to the direction of extension of the rail, and are controlled via an operating mechanism. When the mutually displaceable parts are in locked position, at least one of the ratchets engages in a corresponding snap-in hole. At least one retaining element prevents involuntary disengaging of the ratchet from an effective locking position. As a result, reliable locking is achieved, in particular in the event of a crash, which entails high frequency vibrational fractions.

The bolts (1, 7) of the pair of bolts can be moved independently of each other at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the rail. In each position along the rail (9) at least one bolt (1, 7) can fall into a snap-in hole (11). One of the bolts (1) has a segment (3), which tapers away from the basic body (1') and includes an end which has a smaller cross section and which adjoins an end segment (5), that faces the rail. The largest width of the pair of bolts (1, 7) exceeds the length of the snap-in holes (11). The smallest distance between the bolts (1) and (7) is larger than the width of the web-like material parts (13).

An actuating element couples the nut with the latch to switch it between its positions. A support pivotal in the housing about the axis carries a pair of coupling gears in mesh with and flanking the input gear. The support is rockable about the axis from a central position in which neither of the coupling gears meshes with the output gear into a pair of end positions in each of which a respective one of the coupling gears meshes with the output gear and couples same to the input gear. The support is biased into the central position with a relatively small force such that on rotation of the input gear in either direction the biasing force is overcome and the support is rocked in the same direction into the respective end position.
