摘要:
An implantable prosthesis includes a porous polymeric member having pores present in its wall structure wherein these pores contain a variety of therapeutically useful compositions including, collagen, genetically altered cells and piezoelectric materials. A process of preparing such a prosthesis is also disclosed.

A heparin-collagen dispersion is provided for impregnating a vascular prosthesis with heparin and collagen. The dispersion is prepared at an alkaline pH to allow the addition of heparin without causing the agglutination of collagen from the dispersion. The impregnation of collagen and heparin within the prosthesis effectively prevents blood loss and thrombus formation after implantation of the prosthesis.

A magnetic implant for treating sleep disorders includes a first anchor, a first magnet coupled to the first anchor, a tongue anchor, a second magnet coupled to the tongue anchor, and a support for aligning the first and second magnets so that a repelling force is generated between the magnets for urging the second magnet away from the first magnet. In one embodiment, the support aligns a magnetic pole of the first magnet with a repelling magnetic pole of the second magnet, guides movement of the first and second magnets relative to one another, and maintains the first magnet at a fixed distance from the first anchor. In one embodiment, the repelling force urges the second magnet toward the first anchor. The first anchor may be connected to bone or soft tissue.

Medical devices, and in particular implantable medical devices, may be coated to minimize or substantially eliminate a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. The medical devices may be coated with any number of biocompatible materials. Therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may be mixed with the biocompatible materials and affixed to at least a portion of the medical device. These therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may also further reduce a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. Various materials and coating methodologies may be utilized to maintain the drugs, agents or compounds on the medical device until delivered and positioned.
摘要:
The present invention is related to a polymeric vehicle for delivery of bioactive agents, and preferably, for the delivery of one or more bioactive agents. The invention is also directed to a percutaneous device securing and drug delivery device comprising, as a component thereof, a material which delivers antimicrobial and/or other wound-healing factors at the site of the insertion of the catheter into the body. The device, when applied as described herein, provides complete anti-microbial coverage around the entry point of a percutaneous device and, preferably for a length greater than the diameter of the device. The present invention is also directed to methods for using such devices in combination with percutaneous devices primarily to reduce site infections.

A medical specimen carrier, and a method for using the same, is provided wherein the specimen carrier includes a housing having a plurality of compartments therein each capable of holding a tissue specimen. The housing has a length and a cross-section smaller than a cross-section of a surgical port so as to enable it to pass therethrough, and is dimensioned to be placed within the surgical site separate from the surgical port or other surgical instrument. The medical specimen carrier further includes a cover device capable of selectively opening and closing each of the plurality of compartments.
