    摘要: A starting and operating circuit for gaseous discharge lamps which includes a pair of input terminals for connection to an alternating current supply and a pair of output terminals for connection across the lamp. A ballast inductor is connected at its ends in series between one of the input terminals and one of the output terminals. A pulse generator is connected between one of the input terminals and one of the output terminals and another pulse generator is connected between a tapping point on the ballast inductor and the outer input terminal or the other output terminal or a point on the connection therebetween. The high voltage pulse generator includes a non-linear capacitor (NLC) and a semiconductor bipolar thyristor (commonly known as SIDAC) connected in series, the non-linear capacitor and the bipolar thyristor being connected in parallel with the lamp.

    摘要: A fluted feed-through for a discharge lamp includes a fluted ceramic core with plural channels and plural individual molybdenum or tungsten wires running in different ones of the plural channels. The wires are twisted together at the ends of the feed-through. The feed-through is insertable into a capillary tube of a ceramic discharge lamp. The wires of the feed-through have a different thermal coefficient of expansion than the ceramic discharge lamp. The wires are thin enough so that the absolute magnitude of the thermal coefficients of expansion is sufficiently small to prevent seal cracks and leaking.

    摘要: In a metal halide arc discharge lamp having a light emitting arc discharge tube surrounded by a heat absorbing, light transmissive shroud hermetically sealed within an outer lamp envelope, more nearly isothermal operation of the arc tube surface is achieved by using a shroud having a geometry (e.g., a hollow frustum of a cone) such that the shroud is closer to the cooler portions of the arc tube than to the hotter portions. At steady state lamp operation, the shroud absorbs heat emitted by the arc tube and radiates a portion of the absorbed heat back to the arc tube. By having a shroud geometry and spacing such that the inner surface of the shroud is closest to the coolest portions of the arc tube and furthest away from the hottest portions of the arc tube, the shroud radiates more heat back to the cooler portions, thereby providing more nearly isothermal operation of the surface of the arc tube than can be accomplished with a coaxial, cylindrical shroud or no shroud.

A starting circuit is disposed within the lamp electrically connected in parallel with the arc tube. The starting circuit comprises a non-linear dielectric element (e.g., a non-linear capacitor) and a glow capsule. The glow capsule is located within the outer envelope proximate the arc tube and adapted to produce ultraviolet radiation.

    摘要: A metal halide arc discharge lamp comprises an arc tube containing a chemical fill including mercury and metal halides and having first and second electrodes respectively sealed at opposite ends thereof. An outer envelope surrounds the arc tube and has first and second terminals for electrical connection thereto. An electrodeless source of ultraviolet radiation is provided within the outer envelope proximate the arc tube for producing radiation which illuminates the path between the electrodes of the arc tube to decrease the amount of time for generating a gaseous discharge therebetween. The ultraviolet light source includes an envelope of ultraviolet light transmitting material having opposing ends. Portions of the envelope of the ultraviolet light source are capacitively coupled across the electrodes of the arc tube such that the source produces ultraviolet radiation during lamp starting when the first and second terminals of the lamp are energized.
