Abstract:
This invention encompasses a high solids, solvent-based, thermosetting two-component coating composition having the necessary flexibility, hardness and durability that make it an effective coating for both elastomeric and hard metal substrates. The composition comprises a polyester-urethane polyol and a curing agent comprising a polyisocyanate.
Abstract:
A high solids, organic solvent based, sprayable coating composition which is capable of acid catalyzed crosslinking is composed of an active hydrogen-containing resin, a curing agent present externally and/or internally as a part of the active hydrogen-containing resin, and a catalytic amount of a non-ionic, saturated or unsaturated organic polycyclic ester of a sulfonic acid.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a liquid composition containing a reaction product prepared by reacting a hydrophobic polyol and an organosilicon-containing material. The organosilicon-containing material comprises an organosilicon-containing substance free of functional groups attached to carbon and essentially free of alkali metal ions, having atoms bonded directly to silicon all of which atoms are selected from O, N, and/or Cl. The organosilicon-containing substance additionally has moieties directly bonded to organosilicon which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol. The reaction product is not capable of being gelled when subjected to a specific three-step gel test, has a ratio of milliequivalents of residual moieties from the organosilicon-containing material which are displaceable by reaction with water and/or alcohol to milliequivalents of hydroxyl moieties from the polyol greater than 1, and is capable of self-curing to a continuous film in the presence of moisture.
Abstract:
Described are water reducible coating compositions comprising (A) an organosilane-polyol which is the reaction product of a hydrophilic polycarbinol and an organosilicon material selected from the group consisting of an organosilane, a hydrolyzed and condensed organosilane and mixture, thereof; and (B) a curing agent for the coating compositions.
Abstract:
Curable lactone derived resins are the reaction product of (a) a lactone modified resin of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is the organic radical formed by removing at least one hydroxyl hydrogen atom from an ester containing from 1 to 3 acrylyl or alpha-substituted acrylyl groups and one or two hydroxyl groups, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, x is from 4 to 7 wherein at least (x+ 2) R's are hydrogen, n has an average value of from about 0.2 to about 5 and a is 1 or 2; and (b) an isocyanate. The lactone derived resins are especially useful for floor tile coatings which are UV curable. The coatings are abrasion resistant, yet are flexible.
Abstract:
Water-soluble polylactones and poly(lactone-urethanes) are disclosed. The polylactones are prepared by ring opening a lactone such as epsilon-caprolactone with a low equivalent weight active hydrogen-containing material having at least two active hydrogen groups per molecule selected from the class consisting of hydroxyl, primary amine, secondary amine and thiol, and having anionic water-solubilizing groups or groups which are readily reacted to form anionic water-solubilizing groups. The resulting polylactone can be combined with curatives such as amine-aldehyde condensates to form water-soluble coating compositions and can be reacted with polyisocyanates to form unique water-soluble poly(lactone-urethanes, ureas or thiolurethanes) which are also useful for coating applications.Surprisingly, it has been found that the polyurethanes prepared by reacting organic polyisocyanates with the novel polylactone adducts of the present invention and optionally low molecular weight diols are more water dispersible and form coatings with greater adhesion to the substrate and less water sensitivity than comparable polyurethanes prepared by reacting organic polyisocyanates with conventional polylactone diols and low equivalent weight active hydrogen-containing materials which also have anionic water-solubilizing groups.
Abstract:
Cured coatings having a high degree of extensibility, gloss retention, good sprayability and other desirable properties are obtained from compositions made by reacting (A) an organic polyisocyanate; (B) a hydroxy-containing material selected from the group consisting of saturated polymeric diols having low glass transition temperatures, saturated low molecular weight diols, and mixtures thereof; (C) a hydroxyalkyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (D) one or more copolymerizable monomers; and (E) a curing agent. These compositions, when used as coatings, are durable, adherent and highly flexible. The coatings are particularly useful on resilient and rubbery substrates such as EPDM rubber, foam rubber, polyurethane foam, and on metal surfaces, such as mild steel and aluminum.
Abstract:
Colloidal dispersions in non-aqueous media are sterically stabilized in a solvent medium by a copolymer of1. a chain-like terminally monoethylenically unsaturated macromonomer which is soluble in the solvent and has a molecular weight of at least 500, and2. an anchor component comprising a polymerizable material consisting of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer,Where the stabilizer contains masked hydroxyl groups.
Abstract:
Thermoplastic coatings have a high degree of extensibility, gloss retention, good sprayability and other desirable properties are obtained from ungelled, storage-stable compositions comprising the reaction product of (A) an interpolymer of a hydroxyalkyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and a copolymerizable compound, (B) an organic polyisocyanate, and (C) a polymeric polyol of low glass transition temperature. Rather than using the interpolymer itself, it is also possible to form useful products by reacting (B) and (C) with a hydroxyalkyl ester monomer in combustion with another copolymerizable monomer. These compositions when used as coatings are adherent, durable and highly extensible. The coatings are particularly useful on resilient and rubbery substrates such as foam rubber, polyurethane foams and vinyl foam and on metal surfaces such as mild steel and aluminum.
Abstract:
Cured coatings having a high degree of extensibility and other desirable properties are obtained from compositions comprising a hydroxyl-containing, urethane reaction product containing a polyester component and an amine-aldehyde resin. Preferred compositions contain a polymeric polyol of low glass transition temperature. These compositions are storage-stable in one package, and the cured coatings are adherent, durable and highly extensible. These coatings are particularly useful on resilient and rubbery substrates, such as foam rubber, polyurethane foam and vinyl foam, and on soft metal surfaces such as mild steel and aluminum.
