摘要:
A method and apparatus for producing very high crown and camber curvature in slider materials using a laser processing system which produces fluence which is variable in a controllable manner, by applying a laser beam to the flex side of the slider material and varying the fluence of the laser beam to optimize the curvature in the slider material. The fluence is variable by finely controlling the power output of the laser or by changing the spot size of the laser beam. The beam spot size can be changed by using a focusing lens to establish a focal plane and then varying the relative positions of the slider relative and the focal plane. An apparatus for producing high crown and camber is also disclosed, as well as a slider produced by the process of applying a laser beam to the flex side of the slider material and varying the fluence of the laser beam to optimize the curvature in the slider material.

Method and apparatus for laser texturing symmetrically and simultaneously both sides of a glass containing substrate, such as a magnetic disk. There are two or more acousto-optic modulators arranged in series to obtain equal laser pulses from a first beam from a laser, apparatus for capturing a first order diffracted beam from each acousto-optic modulator; monitoring the wavelength of the laser source, providing a visible indicator or diagnostic beam for each first order diffracted beam, and combining each first order diffracted beam with its respective indicator beam to form a texturing beam for texturing each side of the substrate.

The invention is a method and apparatus for imprinting a microscopic code on a small surface, such as the edge of a magnetic disk, or the head used to read or write information to the disk and a magnetic disk imprinted with such microscopic identification codes. The invention provides a way to identify products using microscopic codes, such as bar codes, by using a laser to imprint such microscopic bar codes on a product. The identification meets the stringent cleanliness requirements of the computer industry without generating debris, and so is exceptionally suited for use in identifying hard disks and heads used in a disk drive.

The present invention provides methods and systems for repeatably creating and severing a short circuit to protect an electronic component from ESD. A short circuit may be formed between read sensor pads of a read sensor by depositing a shorting material on a magnetic head using a Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) process. The short circuit may be unshorted using a laser scan configured to sever the shorting material. In one embodiment, a shorting station may be provided to prevent spreading of the shorting material to undesired areas of the electronic component.

A magnetic recording disk drive has a magnetic recording head that includes first and second separating layers, and a heater formed between the first and second separating layers. The heater has a dimension such a thermal protrusion is induced in the recording head and a thermal conductance between the recording head and a recording medium is enhanced.

A multi-layer electrically conductive shunt is located on the exterior surface of a slider in electrical contact and extending between first and second lead ends of leads that are connected to a sensor of a read head. Electrically conductive spaced apart first and second read pads are located on the conductive shunt in electrical contact with the first and second lead ends via the conductive shunt. The conductive shunt includes a thick gold layer which is located between and interfaces an adhesion layer and a cap layer wherein the adhesion layer makes direct electrical contact with the aforementioned first and second lead ends.

Methods for adjusting the curvature of a slider may include providing a first slider including an air bearing surface and a back surface opposite the air bearing surface. The camber and crown of the first slider are measured, and a plurality of scribes are made at positions on the back surface of the first slider. The change in camber and crown due to each scribe on the first slider is measured. The scribe position and change in crown and camber per position is recorded in a data structure. A second slider is provided, the second slider including an air bearing surface and a back surface opposite the air bearing surface. The camber and crown of the second slider are measured. A desired amount of change in crown and camber is determined. Scribe positions are selected based on information from the data structure so that the desired amount of change in crown and camber will be obtained. The back surface of the second slider is scribed at the selected scribe positions.

A read head is provided with an N-cycle switch for sequentially shorting and unshorting a sense current circuit of a read head so that the read head will be protected from electrostatic discharges (ESDs) by shorting when the read head is not being tested and unshorted during tests of the read head. The shorting and unshorting switches, which are mounted on or in a slider carrying the read head, are activated by a laser beam.

A method for adjusting the curvature of an air bearing surface (ABS) of a slider having a back surface opposite the ABS. The method includes steps of repeatedly measuring the curvature of the ABS and scribing lines (e.g. with a laser scribing tool) on the back surface to partially adjust the curvature of the ABS. In each measuring/scribing installment, the curvature of the ABS is measured and compared with a final target curvature to determine a curvature difference between the measured curvature and final target curvature. Each installment of scribing lines corrects for a predetermined percentage of the curvature difference. The predetermined percentage may be different in succeeding installments. Alternatively, each installment changes the curvature of the slider to match an intermediate target curvature. In a three-installment process, for example, there will be two intermediate target curvatures and a final target curvature.
