An aluminum-lithium based alloy which comprises 10-20 wt. % silicon, 1.5-5.0 wt. % copper, 1.0-4.0 wt. % lithium, 0.45-1.5 wt. % magnesium, 0.01-1.3 wt. % iron, 0.01-0.5 wt. % manganese, 0.01-1.5 wt. % nickel, 0.01-1.5 wt. % zinc, 0.01-0.5 wt. % silver, 0.01-0.25 wt. % titanium and the balance aluminum. The alloy is utilized to cast high temperature assemblies including pistons which have a reduction in density and similar mechanical properties including tensile strengths to alloys presently used.

An apparatus 10 for inspecting the surface of an object S moving in the direction of travel 23 relative to the apparatus comprises a modular sensing head assembly 11 including a plurality of sensing head modules 12, 13, each of which includes a number of sensing stations 16-21. Each sensing station includes a light source 77, 81, 84 for generating a line of light extending across substantially the width of the surface of the object and a plurality of optical detector means for detecting light scattered from the line of light by the surface of the object. The optical detectors are positioned and oriented to receive scattered light scattered along paths lying in detection planes which are perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the surface of the object. Signal processing electronics are provided to convert the light received by the detectors into analog signals which are multiplexed, converted to digital signals, filtered and then compared to preselected thresholds to determine the existence of any defects in the surface.

A method and apparatus for reflective enhancement of printed images includes forming a plurality of element schemes in the surface of a printed continuous web of material. The element schemes are in preselected registration with colors, shapes or densities of colors in the printed image. By controlling the various element schemes, the reflectivity of portions of the printed image may be enhanced.

A method and an apparatus for separating shredded particles, for instance particles of used beverage cans, into respective fractions that contain greater amounts of one of a plurality of alloys from which the cans have been made. The method includes screening the shredded material to provide particles having a desired particle size, and gravimetrically separating the screened particles into a plurality of groups based upon the mass of the particles. The heaviest bulk density group of particles is selected for further processing and is first preferably passed through a flattening device to flatten the particles, which are then conveyed through a varying magnetic field provided by a linear induction motor so that the particles containing higher concentrations of higher conductivity alloys can be further separated from particles of alloys having lower electrical conductivities. The highest conductivity fraction that results includes a high concentration of can body alloy, which can then be recycled as scrap material for further processing into can body alloy material. The other fraction of material, depleted of the can body alloy, can be more readily used in the manufacture of new can end material.

An improved method for extracting lithium from aluminum-lithium alloys includes providing an electrorefining cell which contains a cathode comprising a pure molten tin pool and a source of lithium from a molten aluminum-lithium alloy. The lithium is extracted from the Al-Li alloy by applying an electric current through the electrorefining cell whereby lithium dissolves from the molten Al-Li alloy into the tin pool and forms a tin-lithium alloy. The formed Sn-Li alloy may be recovered by casting under a salt layer and cooled to solidification. In a further aspect, the recovered Sn-Li alloy may be processed to further recover lithium therefrom by either electrolytic recovery in a separate electrolytic cell, vacuum distillation or a chemical extraction process.

A blade setting tool assembly for clamping a plurality of heat seal and cutting blades within a blade retaining channel of a three blade seal bar is disclosed. The blade setting tool assembly includes a blade positioning block having an upwardly directed blade positioining slot extending along its length to receive the exposed blade edges. A pair of mounting straps fixed to the blade positioning block extend upwardly along opposite sides of the block and include upper ends terminating above the height of the blade seal bar. The strap upper ends are each formed with a slot open to one of the vertical edges thereof to receive opposite end portions of an eccentric roller extending between the upper ends. Rotation of the roller causes an eccentric or throw portion thereof to firmly press against the top surface of the blade seal bar to transmit clamping pressure which firmly seats the blades within the channel with the exposed blade edges pressed against the blade positioning slot bottom into a desired profile relationship. Existing screws are then used to tighten the clamping bar portions of the blade seal bar together to firmly clamp the blades within the blade retaining channel. A method of properly positioning and clamping plural blades along their entire length with the blade setting tool assembly of the invention is also enclosed.

A melt drag metal strip casting system of the type wherein molten metal is delivered from a supply of the molten metal into contact with a grooved chill surface at a casting station and the chill surface is driven for movement in a path past the casting station at a predetermined linear rate to quench and withdraw a continuous strip of metal from the molten metal supply, the grooves in the chill surface being gradually parallel and spaced from one another to provide land regions between adjacent grooves and the strip having a bottom surface adhering to the land regions of the chill surface and an unsolidified top surface as it is withdrawn from the molten metal supply, including a top roll adjustable mounted above the chill surface and spaced therefrom by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the strip desired with the top roll in contact only with the unsolidified top surface of the strip, with the temperature of the top roll surface in contact with the unsolidified top surface of the strip being maintained at a level which will not solidify the top surface of the metal being cast.
