In some embodiments, the variable port mechanisms can be used to control any one or more of a plurality of operating parameters of a REC device independently of one or more others of the operating parameters. In some embodiments, the REC devices can have a plurality of fluid volumes that change in size during rotation of the REC device, and that transition to a zero volume condition during the rotation of the REC device. Systems are also provided that can include one or more REC devices. Methods for controlling various aspects of REC devices, including methods of controlling one or more operating parameters, are also provided.

The exhaust steam from the primary expansion is taken off when the trailing face of the rotary piston passes the inlet port of the expansion chamber housing, the exhaust outlet secondary expansion being placed approximately 180 degrees from the primary expansion inlet in the curved portion of the expansion chamber housing wherein back pressure is not imparted to the primary expansion.

A non-contact rotary vane gas expanding apparatus functions to convert controlled expansion of gas under pressure to rotary motive power. The gas expanding apparatus includes a stator housing, a rotor supported in the stator housing to undergo rotation relative thereto with the rotor having an output member thereon, a plurality of vanes disposed in a plurality of radial slots defined in the rotor and being circumferentially spaced from one another and radially reciprocable relative to the rotor such that outer tip portions of the vanes are maintained in non-contacting substantially sealed relation with the stator housing, a plurality of gas receiving pockets defined in the rotor adjacent to trailing sides of the radial slots and of the outer tip portions of the vanes with reference to the direction of rotation of the rotor relative to the stator housing, and a plurality of formations defined in the stator housing to effectuate the transfer of gas under pressure through the stator housing to successive ones of the gas receiving pockets to enable the expansion of the pressurized gas therein to cause rotation of the rotor and the output member therewith. The non-contact rotary vane gas expanding apparatus can be utilized in a rotary motive power production system in conjunction with a source of thermal energy, a closed flow circuit, and a control arrangement defining fluid pressure transfer paths connected to the gas expanding apparatus for enabling the system to automatically develop the optimum thermal conversion efficiency by automatically matching the pressure ratio thermally generated across the gas expanding apparatus with the pressure ratio thermally generated in the closed flow circuit.

A rotary internal combustion engine having a housing defining a chamber is disclosed. A fixed shaft extends coaxially through the chamber. A plurality of vanes are pinned to a collar which is rotative about the shaft. One vane is rigidly secured to the collar. A cylindrical drum is positioned in the working chamber with the centerline of the drum radially offset from the centerline of the working chamber. The vanes extend through slots or apertures in the rotor to close proximity with the chamber wall. A fuel delivery system communicates with the chamber through approximately 90 degrees of the compression cycle. An exhaust opening communicates with the chamber at the end of the expansion cycle whereby the compression ratio is substantially less than the expansion ratio. In one embodiment means are provided to vary the compression and expansion ratios.

An expansion engine of the rotary screw type having cooperative male and female rotors in which high pressure vapor enters the engine at the inlet end of the rotors through internal and centrally located inlet ports. A central and adjustable control piston functions to admit high pressure vapor to the interior of the rotors which then enters the cavities between the rotors for ultimate expansion. The control piston has an equalizing port for controlling the fluid pressure in the expansion chamber so it will not be less than the pressure in the exhaust chamber of the engine, thereby contributing to the efficiency of the engine.
