    摘要: A key activation system for use in an electronic device is provided. The system comprises an activation mechanism associated with a key in the system, a first feedback system and a second feedback system. The activation mechanism is associated with the key activation system and provides a first feedback sense when the activation mechanism has triggered the first activation condition. The second feedback system provides a second feedback sense indicating when the key triggers the second activation condition. In the system, the second feedback system operates independently from the activation mechanism and the first activation condition is triggered before the second activation condition when the activation mechanism is initially engaged. An activation mechanism may be centrally located for a set of keys.

    摘要: A keyboard having fewer keys than the characters available utilizes linked sequences of keystrokes in generation of some characters. Other characters may be produced with one keystroke. The difference between linked keystrokes and independent keystrokes both made in sequence is determined by either the length of the interval between keystrokes or use of a delimiting key. A threshold level for the interval between keystrokes which decides whether two sequential keystrokes are linked or not may be set by the user or may be automatically determined with the use of an adaptive predictive algorithm. It is generally suggested that pairs of keys be linked, particularly adjacent pairs of keys in a fixed configuration, and that the characters generated by either a single keystroke of a given key or the characters generated by two linked keystrokes be represented upon the keyboard in a disposition which facilitates intuitive learning of the keyboard. The characters ‘A’ and ‘B’ might both be represented between the keys identified as ‘1’ and ‘2’ with the ‘A’ adjacent the ‘1’ and the ‘B’ adjacent the ‘2’ connoting that the linked keystrokes 1-2 generate the character ‘A’, the linked keystrokes 2-1 generate the character ‘B’ and independent keystrokes 1 and 2 each generate the characters ‘1’ and ‘2’ respectively. The keys may be identified and arranged in a fixed configuration in any manner desired. A hexagonal pattern with keys identified by a simplified Morse code using ·, -, ··, --, ·-, and -· is specifically suggested for use by those having a physical disability.

    摘要: A display switch includes switch elements disposed on a display which is capable of electrically changing images displayed thereon. Above the switch elements are disposed a plurality of buttons formed of a transparent material and supported by a frame member. A depression is formed in each of at least two opposite side surfaces of each button, and the frame member has flange portions that engage with the depressions in order to limit movement of the buttons. Also, elastic members are disposed under the buttons in order to allow each button to move during operation while imparting a feel to a user and to automatically return the button to its original position.

The keyboard also has a thumb operated keypad mounted on the exterior of the keyboard. The characters and functions are grouped into generally task related modes or lanes. The lanes are divided into blocks, each block having two rows of data, each of the rows corresponding to one of the opposed keypads. The lanes are chosen by activating a first key with the thumb, and a second key with the finger. The thumb operated key is activated to chose a relationship for mapping between blocks of data in each lane and the finger operated keys. The mapping relationships assign characters and functions by row and column to opposed keypads and fingers respectively.

    摘要: A hand movement controller is described which permits a variety of control functions to be performed by single left or right handed operation, and is particularly suitable for handicapped persons. The controller comprises a base which is generally wedge-shaped in side elevation with a sloping top surface on which is located a movable palm support on which the hand rests. One or two rows of keys are symmetrically spaced about the front edge of the palm support for engagement by the fingers of the hand. The distance between the movable palm support and keys is adjustable so that it can support the fingers to permit them to pivot freely about the knuckles with minimal strain over a prolonged period of time. The spacing of the row or rows of keys about the palm support is designed to optimize reaction time for fast operation. In a preferred embodiment an outer row of five keys and an inner row of three keys are used and permit control of movement in three dimensions. The palm support can be moulded from a plastic thermoplastic material to be custom suited to the individual.
