To manufacture a lens-retainer subassembly for an instrument cluster, a lens is cut from a flat acrylic sheet by a laser operation, and the resulting flat lens is pressed against the curved surface of a retainer by ultrasonic welding apparatus and bonded to the perimeter of the retainer. The retainer surface and a welding horn are shaped to conform to the desired lens shape and to portions of the retainer so that as the horns are moved together the lens will be squeezed between two complementary curved surfaces into the desired shape, and the welding fixes the lens shape.

A method and apparatus is provided for fusing tabs of a hook or loop fastener material to opposing ends of an elongated band of cooperating hook or loop fastener material. The tabs are fed from two sources of a first material on opposing sides of a bonding station. The band is formed from a supply of a second material which is first fed to a transfer device having first and second grippers. The grippers transfer the band of material to the bonding station in a direction transverse to the transfer of the tabs to the bonding station, and the ends of the band are placed in overlapping relationship with the tabs. Subsequently, a pair of ultrasonic welding horns are moved into contact with the overlapping material to fuse the band of material to the tabs. The apparatus operates under the control of a programmable controller and the length of the band may be varied by altering a length of the second material fed between the grippers of the transfer mechanism.

A fitment comprising a pouring spout having a peripheral flange at one end and a closure at a second end is attached to a paperboard carton formed with a hole in a side panel. The carton is moved intermittently along a conveyor, such as that used in a filling machine. An arm having a spud oscillates about a horizontal axis parallel to the conveyor. The arm is pivoted to down position as the carton reaches the fitment attaching station so that the fitment enters the open end of the carton with the spud aligned with the carton hole. The arm is mounted on a first carriage which reciprocates horizontally in a first direction to project the closure through the hole until the flange abuts the inside of the carton panel. An ultrasonic welding horn is mounted on a second carriage which reciprocates in alignment with the first carriage in a second direction opposite the first direction. The horn welds the fitment flange to the inside of the carton panel.

The adhesive bonding strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive on a laminate is selectively modified by applying a discontinuous layer of a non-adhesive material to the pressure sensitive adhesive. Preferably, the laminate is a preformed, label stock, including a label or substrate having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface thereof and a release sheet overlying the adhesive. The label is first delaminated from the release sheet to expose the oppositely facing surface of the label and the release sheet. A discontinuous layer of the non-adhesive material is then printed on either the release sheet or the adhesive. The release sheet is relaminated back onto the label to form a modified laminate with new adhesive properties. When the label is then separated from the release layer, the non-adhesive material adheres to the pressure sensitive adhesive to reduce the exposed surface area of the adhesive.

An ultrasonic transducer assembly for hygienic ultrasonic sealing is disclosed. The assembly includes a hygienic ultrasonic sealing area and a non-hygienic area, separated by a barrier wall. The barrier wall has an opening which allows an ultrasonic converter to move back and forth ("reciprocate") through the opening. The ultrasonic converter is also vibrated at an ultrasonic frequency by machinery located in the non-hygienic area of the machine, and transmits those vibrations to the hygienic area of the machine. The converter has a null area at which the converter is vibrated substantially minimally and other areas which are much more vigorously vibrated. A generally cylindrical sealing surface is fixed with respect to the null area of the transducer. The sealing surface is wiped by a wiping seal mounted to the edge of the opening. These two parts may also be reversed. Other details of the anvils, ultrasonic transducers, their drives and assemblies, and other aspects of an ultrasonic gable carton sealing machine are also disclosed.

A screw (81) having right-handed threads (84) and opposite, left-handed threads (85) moves horns (43, 63) from their initial point of contact at opposite tire tread edges toward centerline (16) of tire tread stock (11) while horns (43, 63) deliver ultrasonic energy to top edge (15). As transducers (40, 60) near centerline (16), transducer (40) is withdrawn and transducer (60) continues thereacross, insuring a complete seal across the entire splice joint. A quality seal is obtained by selection of transducer (40, 60) frequency, control of transducer (40, 60) amplitude, and control of the pressure and speed of the transverse motion of horns (43, 63).

An ultrasonic welding horn is provided that has an insert connected to the body of the horn proximal to the welding edge, the insert being dampened from the ultrasonic operating frequency by attaching it to the horn body at a nodal point that has little or no vibration during the operational vibrational mode of the horn. During a welding operation, the insert is positioned to secure living cell tissue that is between two plastic layers, preventing undesirable vibration of the cell tissue. The welding edge, which extends around the periphery of the insert, contacts the plastic layers around the cell tissue, welding a seal between the layers.

A method of making an interior panel of an automotive vehicle door having an exterior surface which is to face toward the interior of the automotive vehicle when installed therein. An apparatus utilized in the method comprises a mold assembly including a first vacuum mold component having a mold surface shaped to form the exterior surface of an upper section of the door panel, a second non-vacuum mold component cooperable in side-by-side relation with the first vacuum mold component having a mold surface shaped to form the exterior surface of a lower section of the door panel and a third non-vacuum mold component cooperable in opposed relation with the first and second mold components having a mold surface shaped to form the entire opposite surface of the door panel. The method comprises the steps of heating a laminated sheet, and vacuum forming the heated sheet in the first vacuum mold component. Next, a seal is formed along a marginal edge of the vinyl sheet with an elongated sealing surface at a side of the first vacuum mold component which cooperates in side-by-side relation with the second non-vacuum mold component. Thereafter, a substrate is molded and bonded with the vacuum formed laminate sheet to form a panel in which the substrate defines (1) an opposite surface of the panel having a shape corresponding to the mold surface of the third mold component and (2) an exterior surface of the panel having a shape corresponding to the mold surface of the second mold component.
